Cheapest Way to Travel Between Cape Town and Johannesburg
With the economy as it is today, we all have to tighten our belts and turn every penny over twice. As the rand weakens to the dollar, fuel and food prices rise along with everything else, which means that the cost of everyday living is constantly on the rise.
This survey was done to see what the fastest, cheapest, most convenient and safest means of transport is between Cape Town and Johannesburg. Hopefully this surrvey will help you save some time or money. This survey was done of flights, trains, busses and taxis departing on the 24th and 27th of April 2015. The Monday the 27th is Freedom Day in South Africa, and one of our 12 annual public holidays. If you plan on using the three day weekend to travel down to the cost from Joburg or up to the highveld for a family visit, then this survey will be especially hedpul to you. But you can also use the price data from the survey to plan your next trip, and to see which means of transport suits your schedule and budget the best. Please remember that the prices are subject to change. The survey was done on the 25th of March 2015, prices may have changed since then.

Self Drive
There is no way of costing the exact amount that it will cost to drive between Johannesburg and Cape Town. Each car's fuel consumption differs and the route that everyone takes also differs. We have decided to use the average fuel consumption of 2 of South Africa's best selling cars, the Volkswagen Polo Vivo and the Toyota Hilux 2.5L Diesel, for this survey. The distance we are using for this survey is the distance from Cape Town CBD to Johannesburg CBD. The average fuel consumption of a Polo Vivo 1.4L, according to the Volkswagen Website, is 6.2???/100km or 16.1 km per litre of fuel. The average fuel efficiency of a Toyota Hilux 2.5L Diesel, according to the Toyota Website, is 7.0???/100km or 14.3 km per litre of fuel. The driving distance between Cape Town and Johannesburg (according to Google Maps) is 1397km. The average price of fuel in South Africa at the moment stands at R11.27 in the interior and R10.86 at the coast. The average price of Diesel is R10.05 in the interior and R9.74 at the coast (click here to see the AA fuel price data in South Africa).??The price below is not a quote for car hire. The survey was done on the assumption that the Toyota Hilux or Polo Vivo is already owned by you or me for instance.

Cheapest:
The cheapest way of getting to Johannesburg from Cape Town or from Cape Town to Johannesburg is by train. One way tickets on the Shosholoza Meyl costs R630. The train will however take a total of 27 hours to travel from Cape Town to Johannesburg, which makes it the longest means of transport between the two cities by far. It must be said that if you are 3 or more people travelling together, then the self drive option is more affordable.
Fastest:
To travel by plane is by far the fastes way to travelling between the two cities.
"Hi there - we are regular flyers of the George/OR Tambo route. We always choose to fly Kulula - they are the cheapest generally speaking and there are rarely delays. This last flight we had travelled from Wasington DC via Dubai - a long haul. Needless to say we were jet lagged and had forgotten to book our seats online. We arrived at OR, were met with such friendly faces at the check in and although we were loaded baggage wise to the limit, we were given great seats, great service and a great trip to end our epic journey. Thank you Kulula for always going the extra mile for your passengers."??Juliet Brockwell
