Hotel in ParisIt's not perfect, but if you want to be swept up in the romance of Paris we recommend staying at Hotel Le Squara because of its location, which is 50m off the main strip from the Moulin Rouge & a lot of restaurants, and a 10 minute walk from Liège Metro Station & Pigalle Metro Station. Situated at the foot of Montmartre, the Basilica of the Sacré Cœur is close. If you don't want noise avoid rooms looking to the street, but those have the views. Expect a small room and a tiny lift. If you'd prefer a quiet weekend, then rather look for something in Paris's countryside.

The Purple shall rule! "My first journey to Port Alfred was by ox-wagon. The trek was memorable because this was my only experience of South Africa's traditional "ship of the veld". I was ten years old, an unhappy boarder at a Grahamstown school, and when the short holidays came it was almost impossible to go to Cape Town and back in the time allowed. So I went with other exiles to the school camp at Port Alfred. It was considered a great privilege to be chosen as one of the wagon party. The wagons, bearing tents, set out several days before the end of the term, so that those arriving by train would find everything ready for them. The year was 1910, with Halley's Comet sweeping across the night sky. I saw ostriches and oranges along the road between Grahamstown and the coast, but not a single motor-car. This was still the heyday of the ox-wagon and the rough tracks resounded with the wild cries of the drivers and the sounds of their long whips." Laurie Green in Harbours of Memory. |
