Top hotels - Durban & surrounds
Best is a subjective matter: to some people price will matter more, to others location whilst the level of service may be an overriding factor. Here's some spots we think are superior, but if you think we've left out a top notch spot please let us know. *Prices listed are for 2 adults sharing a room from the 4th until the 10th of January 2013 (may have changed, navigate through the link to check).
Pietermaritzburg
R107,884*. The top place to stay in Pietermaritzburg is the Karkloof Lodge. Private game drives. You can eat any meals on the menu at any time of day (breakfast at 7pm is fine). Unlimited spa treatments. Ask for Villa 3 which is close enough to the main lodge, and has views of the Karkloof River.
Ballito
R9000*. Coco de Mer is a top spot to stay in Ballito. Ask for a room with views of the seas. Eat at La Fiamma.
Umhlanga
Two hotels in Umhlanga standing out from the pack are:

R27,900. Teremok Marine. Close to the sea. Choose the milkwood suite, with its view over the sea from a private balcony and huge bedroom.

R7,200. Manaar House. Fifteen minute walk to the beach (and 25m back up the hill!). Room 3 is the most peaceful.

Helpful staff, easy drive to and from the airport, spatious rooms, breakfast served overlooking the pool, a number of restaurants nearby. Ask for a room with a balcony & sea view (unless you prefer a ground floor room leading onto the pool).

South Africa is currently on the UK's Red List, which means only British nationals are allowed to travel from South Africa to the UK and then they have to complete 10 days quarantine in a hotel. There are no direct flights connecting South Africa to the UK currently.

The Purple shall rule! "The flight from Windhoek to Victoria Falls was delayed due to technical reason. This time the aircraft was much smaller, as it suits the brief 1hr 20 min long journey. There couldn’t have been more than 15 passengers on the plane, most of which got off at Victoria’s Falls. Much to my surprise, a full size lunch was served, followed by a decent sandwich on the next 30 min flight. I guess the ‘pretzel bag’ tendency has not yet overtaken Air Namibia’s food policy. And again, awesome tomato juice."
