The Bottom Line: New vehicle sales came out yesterday. Passenger car sales in RSA are up 4% in April 2012 versus April 2011. I pay particular attention to how Combined Motor Holdings (the company which owns First Car Rental) are doing, as I own shares in the company. The new vehicle sales don't indicate this, but I've got a formula whereby I estimate how they're doing - in March & April 2012 (ie the months since their last financials) I estimate CMH's new vehicle sales are up 7% over the same months in 2011.

Sadly, used car sales, which is where the margins are higher, were 2% down in March 2012 compared to March 2011.
