Last night I was watching Carte Blanche's show on laptops stolen from rental cars at airports, and I was impressed at how it seems that policing has improved. A few years ago, I hired a car from Avis in Durban, my laptop was stolen, and I would have complained about the Durban police's effort except that it was non-existent - I gave the license number of the getaway vehicle & the excuse for a police-force still couldn't catch the perpetrator. Whilst on the subject of car rentals, Tempest Car Hire is renting Tom Tom GPS's for R49/day during February 2012 only. Reserve your Tom-Tom by phoning 011-442-3900. |

The Purple shall rule! "I find The Purple shall rule comments by Anna (Ed: see family cruises newsletter) very distasteful and very racist. It is much too easy to categorise all farm workers as drunkards and spendthrifts. In South Africa this sort of generalisation does not help and in fact just reinforces old prejudices. It is widely acknowledged that the dop-stelsel was a way of paying less to the farm workers - they got wine instead of money. Now labourers are paid for their work and it is the labourers' choice on how to spend the money. I am sure many spend their money on alcohol, and get drunk, but it is not the role of the employer to control what his workers spend their money on." Judy, Fouriesburg, Free State |

The Bottom Line: "Unlike a public company, which shows one set of statements to the public and another to the Internal Revenue Service, a private company typically prepares one set of statements, with the tax authorities foremost in its thinking. Its incentive is not to maximise, but to minimise the income it reports, thereby minimising its tax bill as well." |
