Take a drive down to Ficksburg for the 43rd annual Ficksburg Cherry Festival, taking place 18-20 November 2010. This Free State town is situated at the foot of the Imperani Mountain, on the border with Lesotho (Coordinates: 28°52′25.3″S 27°52′41.2″E). The Cherry Festival attracts around 30,000 people and is the oldest crop festival we have in South Africa.
There is a jam-packed programme scheduled for the festival: a cherry stone spitting competition; the Mr Cherry Pip and Miss Cherry Blossom pageant; the Cherry Festival half marathon; plan-a-wedding workshops; cheese-making workshops; goose plucking workshops; Huis Genoot cooking classes; equestrian events; beer tents; wine stands; and of course, various food stalls.
If you get bored with the events at the festival, you can also join one of the official tours. Highlights include tours to cherry farms to pick your own cherries, tours to an asparagus farm including an asparagus “Big Eat” of local recipes, you can go on a cruise on the Meulspruit Dam that also takes you through a game reserve, book a tour with the Pellissier Gallery to see their collection of South African art and the treasured Pierneef mural paintings, or take the kids on a Steam Train tour and see a private collection of train and farm equipment. (Browse the official Cherry Festival website )
Although Ficksburg is only about a three-hour drive from Johannesburg, there is also a fly-in option: fly from Wonderboom Airport, Pretoria or Lanseria, Johannesburg to Ficksburg Airport so you can enjoy the festival without the driving. Flights costs R1650 return, and the plane can take 12 people. You can book your tickets through Computicket.
Did you know that all the glazed cherries in South Africa are produced in Ficksburg? But although South Africa produces around 220 tons of cherries, our love of cherries has to be sustained by Italy, as we consume a total of 2100 tons of cherries! The Cherry Festival will probably not be a glamorous event (the festival website warns that “Ficksburg does not have a Woolworths”), pack your appetites, be prepared for some old-fashioned celebrations, and feast on cherries to your heart’s content!
