Here's the shore excursions program for the 2010 cruise season for the MSC Sinfonia & MSC Melody cruise ships.

BARRA LODGE

The ship anchors off Barra Lodge, and there is a shuttle service to the island. Leave early to avoid disappointment, as sometimes the shuttle service is cancelled if the sea becomes too rough.

BRL01 SNORKELLING

Duration: approximately 45 minutes

The excursion leaves from the beach at Barra Lodge and you will be transferred by boat to a large reef known as Buddies Reef which rises in parts to 3 m.

Mask, snorkel and fins are included, but sizes cannot be guaranteed so it always advisable to bring your own. An abundant variety of fish and colourful coral will amaze you.

Note: Visibility cannot be guaranteed. Participants MUST be over 12 years. Certain medical conditions (heart problems, ear infections, currently on medication etc) may exclude a guest from participating in this excursion. Please check with the Excursion Office for a full list of these conditions to prevent disappointment. No refund will be given if a guest fails to take notice of these exclusions. BRL02 QUAD BIKES

Duration: approximately 1 hour

This is a great opportunity to drive into the heart of the Palm Groves. You will visit a viewpoint for a photo stop and also have a cultural stop in the rural village. We suggest you wear closed shoes and sunglasses. Passengers are invited to arrive 10 minutes early for familiarization.

BRL03 INHAMBANE BUS TOUR

Duration: approximately 3 hours

This includes a bus trip to Inhambane to visit the second oldest inhabited town in Mozambique. This trip takes you to the market place, passing by the historic docks and churches.

BRL04 DEEP SEA FISHING

Duration: approximately 3 hours

Come and experience the best fishing that Mozambique has to offer. This excursion includes all fishing equipment and bait.

BRL05 PANZI ISLAND CATAMARAN ADVENTURE

Duration: approximately 3 hours

The chance to take a trip on a 33ft catamaran to visit the unique Panzi Island located in the Praia de Barra Bay where the legendary Panzi Shell (aka Silver Dollar) is found in abundance. The transfer is included.

Note: Departure times are divided into groups. Please note your departure time as missed excursions will not be refunded. Panzi Island beach has no beach facilities as it is a deserted beach.

BRL07 LUNCH AT BARRA

Duration: approximately 2 hours

Enjoy a delicious buffet style luncheon offering fresh fish as well as chicken. (Drinks not included)

BRL11 VILLAGE WALK

Duration: approximately 1 hour

Enjoy a guided walk of about 1.5 km into some of the local villages and perhaps sample some locally brewed palm beer. Walking will be through palm groves and fairly thick sand. Bottled water is provided.

MAPUTO (MOZAMBIQUE)

MAP01 CITY TOUR                             

Duration: approximately 2 hours

Explore the capital of Mozambique. This tour covers some of the highlights this city has to offer. The tour will include the historic train station designed by Gustaff Eiffel (who also designed the Eiffel Tower) and was home to a recent movie set to a blockbuster by LeonardoDi Caprio 'Blood Diamond'. You will also visit the market (locally known as the Mercado) where locals and tourists flock to buy and trade goods. The stop at the Museum of the Natural History (entrance included) will allow you to see the country's rich cultural heritage as well as take a glimpse of Mozambique's Fauna and Flora. Don't miss the museum's unique elephant embryo display.

MAP03 CITY TOUR WITH LUNCH AT DOCKS AND HIGH TEA AT POLANA HOTEL

Duration: approximately 5 hours

Explore the capital of Mozambique. This tour covers some of the highlights this city has to offer. The tour will include the historic train station designed by Gustaff Eiffel (who also designed the Eiffel Tower) and was home to a recent movie set to a blockbuster by Leonardo Di Caprio 'Blood Diamond'. Your lunch at Docks Restaurant will include 1 local beer, garlic bread and a plate of medium shrimp (or chicken or fish fillet). After lunch you will visit the St Sebastian Fort, now a military museum containing many relics of Mozambique's colonial past. You will also visit the market (locally known as the Mercado) where locals and tourists flock to buy and trade goods. The stop at the Museum of the Natural History (entrance included) will allow you to see the country's rich cultural heritage as well as take a glimpse of Mozambique's Fauna and Flora. Don't miss the museum's unique elephant embryo display. Top the day off with high tea at Polana Hotel, one of Maputo's finest hotels.

Note: Please note that the stop at Polana hotel is just for high tea. Visiting other parts of the hotel is not part of the excursion as the hotel is currently under re-construction and refurbishment.

MAP09 MATOLA RIVER CRUISE WITH LUNCH

Duration: approximately 3 hours

Explore Matola River and the Catembe main land on the other side of Maputo Bay. The boat departs for a one-hour cruise of the harbour up to the Matola River next to the second biggest urban area in Mozambique, Matola city. Matola is an industrial area with a large residential area, where the wealthy colonial powers used to live. After the cruise we will have lunch at Retiro in Catembe. Lunch will include: a Plate of prawns or grilled chicken or fish of the day served with rice or chips. A local beer or soft drink is also included. After lunch, guests will be transferred back to the harbour.

Note: This tour is weather dependent. Guests need to be able to get in and out of the boat. The transfer from the ship to the pier is done by bus.

PORTUGUESE ISLAND

PISL01 FAST PASS TO INHACA ISLAND

An opportunity to jump the queue and make your way straight to Inhaca Island! Boats from Inhaca will collect you from the vessel and take you to the landing point on Inhaca Island directly in front of the Inhaca Lodge Pestana Resort. Explore this mini-kingdom at your own pace and take advantage of its excellent seafood restaurants, bars and curio stalls. Inhaca Island is a favourite location for bird watchers and is known for its rich and varied bird population. Return to Portuguese Island on the regular shuttle at your leisure and then return to the ship on the ship's zodiac craft. The Shuttle from Inhaca to the Portuguese Island runs until 15h00.

Note: Guests will have to wade through water at low tide so wear shorts and sandals. Access to the Pestana Lodge at the landing jetty is only to guests staying at the Lodge. Children under 12 are not permitted. This transfer is weather dependent. Take cash (Rands, local currency-meticais or USD) as most restaurants do not accept credit cards.

PISL02 INHACA TRANSFERS

Take a regular zodiac trip to Portuguese Island and then transfer to another boat which takes you to Inhaca Island. Explore this mini-kingdom at your own pace and take advantage of its excellent seafood restaurants, bars and curio stalls. Inhaca Island is a favourite location for bird watchers and is known for its rich and varied bird population. Your ticket is valid for one return transfer only.

Note: The last transfer from Portuguese Island to Inhaca will be at 14h00; the last transfer from Inhaca back to Portuguese Island will be at 15h00. Access to the Pestana Lodge at the landing jetty is only to guests staying at the Lodge this transfer is weather dependent.

PISL03 CORAL GARDENS SNORKELLING EXCURSION

Duration: approximately 1 hour

This excursion leaves from Portuguese Island from which you will be transferred to a large catamaran that will sail to the only surviving coral reef in Maputo Bay called The Coral Gardens. The Coral Gardens are one of the few remaining eco-systems of the Dugong (a large marine mammal that was often mistaken for a mermaid) and although sightings are very rare, you might catch a glimpse of this majestic gentle creature. Mask, snorkel and fins are included but sizes are not guaranteed so it is always advisable to bring your own. Rich varieties of fish, starfish and abundant, colourful coral will amaze you. A cash bar is available on board for soft drinks and water.

Certain medical conditions (i.e.: heart problems, back problems, ear infections, currently on medication, etc.) may exclude a guest from participating in this excursion. The transfer there and back is approximately 30 min each. Visibility cannot be guaranteed. Any equipment that is lost or damaged will be charged for.

PISL06 FUN TORPEDO

Duration: approximately 15 min

Fun time! Rocket across the water on a three person fun craft, and bounce and buck along the wake! The Double Webbing Foam handles help you stay on the water. Full speed ahead with the FUN TORPEDO!

Three riders with a maximum weight of 90kg per person are permitted. Riders must be arranged from the lightest to the heaviest at the back. Life jackets are provided.

PISL08 PLAYSTATION WATER TRAMPOLINE

Duration: approximately 15 min

Few things capture child-like enthusiasm better then bouncing with wild abandon. Regardless of your age you will be able to jump to your heart's content. Time for fun in the sun and jump into this summer making a big splash!

Note: Departure times are divided into groups. Please note your departure time as missed excursions will not be refunded. The maximum weight per person is 90 kg. Make sure that you book in advance. Suitable for children from 5 - 12years - parent's supervision required.

PISL09 SEA KAYAKING

Duration: approximately 30 min

Come face to face with some of the hidden wonders that the oceans amazing biodiversity has to offer. From the magic of the sea grass below, to a myriad of shore and pelagic birds above, the diversity of life out there will open your eyes to the last great frontier on this planet. Our Fluid Synergy kayaks feature a soft tri-hull that is super stable. The mellow keel helps tracking in a straight line, while the hull has ample rocker to make it manoeuvrable when needed. The lifted bow punches through waves, while the unique stern design creates stability when surfing or stationary. These kayaks are uniquely built for one or two paddles.

PISL13 WHALE WATCHING

Duration: approximately 2 hours

Every year, these beautiful giants migrate to our shores to mate and calve. Mozambique is sure to be one of the most prominent destinations in the world for viewing marine mammals. Some whale species that you may see include Southern-Right and Humpback whales. Also look out for Bottlenose dolphins, Humpback dolphins, whale sharks and other species of sharks. Remember - as with all wild life viewing - sightings cannot be guaranteed.

Note: Drinks can be purchased for cash. It is recommended that you bring along binoculars (not essential)

PISL14 GAME FISHING

Duration: approximately 2 hours

Anglers have access to some of the best waters in the world for various species of Trevally (locally known as Kingfish) including, Golden, Yellow spot, Blue fin and giant Trevally's. These predators frequent the reefs around the island, along with barracuda, queen mackerel; and king mackerel and Dorado. The biggest draw card for anglers visiting Inhaca Island is the Queen fish. They are undoubtedly one of the finest species in the world, known for the spectacular fights that they put up. And what Inhaca Island is for Queen Fish; Homosassa is for Tarpon. (The current world record comes from Inhaca). Some of the biggest specimens of Queen Fish populate the reefs and wrecks around the island. Awesome fishing for even the most experienced fisherman!

FORT DAUPHIN (MADAGASCAR)

FDP01 CITY TOUR & BOTANICAL GARDEN

Duration: 4 1/2 hours

Fort Dauphin, on the southeast coast of Madagascar, is considered the 'Cote d'Azur of the island. A visit to the city includes all the major highlights as well as a drive through Libanona, one of the glamorous sandy beaches of the area where you will have a short stop to take great pictures. Visit the Camp Flacout Museum, which retraces the fascinating History of Fort Dauphin and its surroundings. Visit the Saidi botanical gardens which contain a wide range of endemic plant species found in the southeast of Madagascar. If you're lucky you may even spot a bamboo lemur. Enjoy a visit to crocodile-lake; as well as the private beach at Vinanikely 'Filaos Beach' where you'll enjoy light snacks and cocktails, followed by a local entertainment performed by the villagers. A short stop to buy souvenirs will round off this excursion.

FDP02 NAHAMPOANA RESERVE

Duration: approx. 3 hours

A coach transfer will take you from the port to the botanical gardens of Nahampoana, located at the foot of St. Louis peak. Your guide will take you around the park along breathtaking hiking trails that wind through vegetation typical to that of the eastern and southern Madagascar. You will admire exotic flora such as young Baobab trees, lemon eucalyptus, oil palm and the triangle palm tree that is indigenous to Fort Dauphin and is to be seen only in Madagascar. Your visit is ideal for spotting lemurs as every lemur species native to the south of Madagascar lives in this park. Lemurs are, however not the only animals you will have the chance to admire - other species include chameleons, tortoises, crocodiles and a variety of birdlife. The excursion will also include a short canoe-ride on the park's streams. Entertainment will be provided by the local villagers.

FDP03 CITY TOUR

Duration: approximately 2 hours                             

Fort Dauphin, on the southeast coast of Madagascar, is more commonly known as the Cote d'Azur of the island. Participation on this excursion, will give you the chance to experience the true feeling and understanding of the Madagascan lifestyles - Not only the culture of various ethnic groups, but also the architecture typical to that of Madagascar will be covered. You will be taken to Libanona, one of the most glamorous sandy beaches in the area, where you'll enjoy a photo stop. The tour also includes a visit to Camp Flacout Museum and the Antanambao local market, which is one of the most bustling outdoor markets. Your excursion will end with a short stop to buy souvenirs.

POINT DES GALETS (REUNION)

REU01 ST. DENIS

Duration: approximately 4 hours

St. Denis is the capital city and the largest town of overseas French colonies. Enjoy a sightseeing bus tour passing by the Prefecture (formerly the East India Company building), the charming Creole houses in Rue de Paris with their shady verandas, the Christian Cathedral and the Hindu temples. Visit to the State Gardens and the Natural History Museum. You'll enjoy free time to stroll around or head to the colourful local market where handicrafts products, scents and spices are for sale - be ready to bargain with the local vendors!

Note: Please note that entrance to Creole houses and temples is not permitted. You will have an opportunity to take photos.

REU02 PITON MAIDO

Duration: approximately 4 hours

Enjoy a busdrive through the ever-changing scenery of sugar cane fields; white and black sandy beaches, and geranium and tamarind cultivations. The final destination is a view point on a high escarpment (2204 mt) overlooking a sheer cliff. Enjoy a breathtaking view over the Circle of Mafate, a valley of deep canyons, where small villages nestle, completely inaccessible by road - the most isolated of these can only be reached on foot (5/7 hours walking) or by helicopter. Pay an interesting guided visit to a Geranium Oil Distillery to learn more about the Geranium distillation process. An opportunity to purchase essences, oils and perfumes presents itself at the Distillery

Note: Visibility at the view points cannot be guaranteed as it is dependent on the weather conditions on the day of call, and occasionally some fog may descend on the valley. It is not suitable for passengers who suffer from vertigo. A jacket is recommended, as the temperature is much cooler at higher altitudes. REU04 SALAZIE

Duration: approximately 8 hours with lunch

A panoramic bus tour takes you past sugar cane fields and vanilla plantations up to the Salazies' Cirque. Visit a Vanilla factory to learn more about this flavour production process, with an opportunity to purchase some essence and vanilla pod. Your stop at Brides' Veil waterfall offers a short photo stop. Time permitting; this tour includes a shopping stop at the handicraft market in St. Denis, the capital city.

Note: Take comfortable shoes, a hat and sun cream. We advise you to bring a raincoat and mosquito repellent. Lunch will be served at a restaurant in Helbourg.

REU05 PITON DE LA FOURNAISE

Duration: approximately 8 hours with lunch

Enjoy a panoramic stop at the Souffleur before continuing on to Nez Le Boeuf where you'll enjoy views over the volcanic ravine. The highlight of the tour is a stop at Pas De Bellecombe to view the crater of Piton De La Fournaise.

Note: Visibility at the view points cannot be guaranteed as it depends on weather conditions on the day of call, as occasionally some fog may descend on the valley. Please wear flat, comfortable shoes, bring an extra layer raincoat, a hat and sun cream. This tour includes sights which may be on uneven and hilly ground. This tour takes us from sea level to more than 2,300 metres (around 8000 feet which may cause shortness of breath. It is not recommended for those with a heart condition. Drive from pier Plaine des Cafres is 1 hour.

REU06 THE WILD SOUTH

Duration: approximately 8 hours with lunch

You will visit the Tremblet area with lava falls dating back to the latest eruption and “Cap Méchant with high black lava falls torn by the ocean waves. Enjoy a guided visit to the Garden of spices and perfumes, rich of endemic plants. This tour includes many photo-stops on the way.

Note: Please wear comfortable shoes and bring an extra layer raincoat, a hat, sun cream and mosquito repellent.

PORT LOUIS (MAURITIUS)

PL01 PANORAMA TOUR WITH LUNCH

Duration: approximately 7 hours with lunch

This full day tour includes a visit to Curepipe, a paradise for shopping lovers; Trou Aux Cerfs, an extinct volcanic crater which offers great photo-opportunities and the sacred lake of the local Hindu community. Enjoy a panoramic bus drive towards the Black River Gorges to admire waterfalls and indigenous bird species. The highlight of the tour is the visit to the Chamarel Seven Coloured Earths, a unique volcanic phenomenon, and the magnificent Chamarel Waterfalls. Lunch included.

Note: Both male and female passengers are required to wear blouses/shirts that cover them adequately for the visit to Grand Bassin.

PL02 ILE AUX CERFS WITH LUNCH

Duration: approximately 7 hours with lunch

Ile Aux Cerfs, or 'Paradise Island', is the ultimate island retreat! Local boats (pirogues) will take you from Trou D' Eau Douce on the east coast to the sheltered lagoon of Ile Aux Cerfs. Enjoy a day on the white beaches and swim in the crystal clear water. Lunch included.

Note: This tour includes 1h30 transfer (by boat and pirogue). One hour drive to Trou d'eau Douce and then 30 minutes by motor boat.

PL03 CASELA BIRD PARK AND EUREKA COLONIAL ESTATE              

Duration: approximately 4 hours

Visit to Casela, the Bird Park hosting about 150 species of birds. After this interesting visit, head to Eureka, the magnificent colonial estate house with antique furniture dating back to 1830 and located in the midst of an enchanting park.

PL04 PAMPLEMOUSSES AND SHOPPING IN PORT LOUIS

Duration: approximately 4 hours

Stroll along the shady pathways of Pamplemousses Botanical Gardens to admire water lilies and lush tropical vegetation. A tour of Port Louis shows off the many churches, mosques and temples. The last stop is at the shopping centre Caudan.

Note:Both male and female passengers are required to wear blouses/shirts that cover them adequately for the visits to places of worship.


PL06 PANORAMIC & BEACH

Duration: approximately 6 hours

WALVIS BAY (NAMIBIA)

WAL01-SWAKOPMUND & CITY TOUR

Duration: approx. 2 hours

A short sightseeing drive through Walvis Bay includes a stop at the Walvis Bay Lagoon, famous for its prolific bird life. A variety of flamingo and rare white pelicans can be seen. Birds visit the lagoon on a migratory basis, and move north towards Etosha and Botswana during certain times of the year. From Walvis Bay depart to Swakopmund where you'll enjoy a sightseeing tour through the coastal town. The Woermann House (1905) now houses an art gallery. The Woermann Tower was used in earlier times as a harbour look out. Other interesting buildings include 'Die Alte Kaserne', 'Hohenzollern haus' and the Railway Station Building.

Note: Limited seats. Guests should take a jacket with as the sea breeze can get cold.

WAL02-ACQUATIC ADVENTURE

Duration: approx. 4 hours

Enjoy a 3 hour boat-cruise in the lagoon and harbour where pelicans and flamingo are sometimes spotted, and on occasion dolphins swim alongside the boat. You can also expect a visit onboard from the 'charmers of the seas', the seals, who quite often hand out their charms in return for a piece of fish. At around midday, a small lunch with snacks, fresh Namibian Oysters and sparkling wine is served onboard the boat.

Note: Limited seats. Guests should take a jacket with as it can get cold on the speed boat. The skipper is also the guide.

WAL03-CULTURAL CONNECTION

Duration: approx. 2 hours

You are invited to share an interesting journey as you depart on a cultural tour where you will experience the township flavours and sights of Walvis Bay. Enjoy a unique glimpse into the complex and interesting history of Namibian cultures in the township of Kuisebmond. End off the tour with a short visit to a shebeen and enjoy a drink with the locals. As the itinerary very much depends on the markets and daily lives of the people in this township, every tour will offer its unique attractions and experience.

WAL07-FUN IN THE DUNES

Duration: approx. 2 hours

One of the most famous desert landmarks in Namibia is Dune 7, one of the highest crests in the dune belt along the west coast of Namibia. The quad-biking is enjoyed within the safety of a group, and is accompanied by experienced quad-guides on an eco-friendly routing at another location in the dunes between Swakopmund and Walvis Bay. With the sand boarding, you have the options of taking the more strenuous climb to the top of the dune, or you are driven to the top on the back of a guide bike, sitting behind the guide. For those wanting to take more than one turn on the boards, this would definitely be the easier way to go. Sand boarding activity is optional and not included in tour.

WAL08-LIVING DESERT TOUR

Duration: approx. 4 hours

From Walvis Bay you will be transferred to Swakopmund, where you are transferred to 4X4 vehicles. From here you travel into the Swakop River towards the local dune belt between Walvis Bay and Swakopmund. The dune belt is about 30km long and 5km wide and supports an impressive wealth of fauna and flora. During your trip we slowly drive along the foot of the dunes. Conservation issues and the geological structure of the desert will be discussed in detail en route. Plenty of time is available for frequent stops to take photos of the dunes and the surrounding environment. This tour provides endless vistas, amazing facts about creature survival in the desert and an adrenalin packed journey where experience knowledge of sand driving is essential.

Note: Very Limited seats. This tour requires walking in dunes at times.
