The breaking news is that the MSC Lirica and MSC Musica will be replacing the MSC Orchestra in South Africa's waters during the 2021/2022 cruise season, and bringing some more music to our ears. To book a cruise on the new ladies, email cruises@southafrica.to and one of our lovely consultants will be delighted to assist you. MSC Cruises is the leading cruise company in South Africa, and the only company offering regular cruises from Cape Town and Durban; and in Dec 2017 won Cruise Critics' award for best cruise line for families. SouthAfrica.TO is MSC Cruises' Top Independent Agency. Try us and you will see why.
MSC is also the best smelling cruise line in the world! There's a specially made fragrance which they spray the ships with, called "MED for MSC", which has a light fig and almond-like smell.
On international MSC Cruises there are 8 types of excursions:
Family Fun
City Tour
Culture and History
Panoramic Tours
Sport and Adventure
Wonder of Nature
Something Special (e.g. birding or nutrition)
Sea and Sun (beach or local cruise in the bay)
There are 2 ways you may get off the ship:
The ship has docked at a port, and you walk off via the gangway
The ship has layed anchor in the sea, and you get off via zodiac speedboats or lifeboats
It's pretty expensive to use the internet on an MSC Cruise ship. We have found the most efficient way of using it is to know exactly what you want to do before you log on, and then log off immediately after having done that, so that you can save time for when you next go online. In November 2014 the Marlink Global C-band iDirect service was installed on 12 of MSC's cruise ships, and they are using the C-band Global System for Mobile (GSM) voice and data, ship management Local Area Network (LAN) communications, and other application; and routing it over the X7 modem. The new system has better performance in rainy conditions and when there's satellite link degradation.
With a few exceptions, the entertainment of MSC's cruise ships is generally free.
There's no need to travel to London's West End or Broadway - every single MSC ship offers evening theatre shows for free; They include many dance and mime acts so that the show is very visually orientated which appeals to all nationalities on board. However the Cirque du Soleil theatre on the newer ships comes at an extra cost - ships with this are the MSC Meraviglia, MSC Seaside and MSC Seaview.
With MSC Cruises, children will enjoy plenty of fun and games, along with other children and MSC entertainers, who organise different activities every day. There are specially designed areas for children's fun and games.
The onboard Mini Club is a meeting place for all the children to play and have fun. There are sports competitions for children of all ages, swimming pool games (on some ships only), as well as tasty snacks and treasure hunts. With so much to do, children will have ample opportunity to play games with other children! They also have a designated playroom for children.
Aboard MSC Cruises, children's holidays are fully taken care of, while the adults relax and enjoy their cruise in total bliss and relaxation.
A highly qualified staff member looks after the smaller children's needs, keeping them entertained, ensuring that their trip is filled with excitement.
Young travellers will want to be involved in shows, games and interactive activities. The MSC Cruises Mini Club is the ideal hangout for them, where they can let loose, play and have fun.
Kids can choose between menus specially designed to satisfy the taste palates as well as their nutritional needs.
In a masterstroke, MSC are introducing lego-themed playrooms in their 4 Lirica-class ships: the MSC Armonia, MSC Lirica, MSC Opera and MSC Sinfonia; and have built their kids clubs on the MSC Meraviglia from the ground up, pivoting around the lego theme. What's great about lego, is that it cuts across cultures - all kids love it - Japanese, westernised kids, South Americans and Africans. Even if children don't understand the language of instruction, they can still understand what to do by watching the instructor and what the other kids are doing.
Evenings on board offer a wide variety of fun and entertainment: guests can watch an international theatre show, be challenged in the games rooms, listen to a live band or classical act, dance the night away in the Disco or try their luck at the casino.
At the Casino you can play Roulette, the symbol of casinos worldwide, or try your hand at Trente et Quarante, one of the most popular games in European casinos. Or why not try chemin de fer, Poker, Punto Banco, Black Jack, Slot Machines or any others from a huge range of games?
For more outrageous fun, you can enrol in MSC's daytime dance classes, boogie the night away or sing your heart out at karaoke with friends.
For quieter moments, simply stretch out by the swimming pool with a speciality cocktail or visit the piano bar to be soothed by music.
MSC Cruises offers certain themed cruises from cooking, to dance, to gym, musical or astrological.
Here's footage of a pirate show and tropical party on board an MSC Divina cruise to Istanbul:
"MSC for Me" : MSC introduced an electronic gadget in June 2017 on the MSC Meraviglia, and on the MSC Seaside in December 2017. The "MSC for Me" electronic bracelet may be connected to passengers' smartphones to show them the day's schedule, what the shore excursions are, their theatre tickets they've booked, supper bookings, previewing of photos & videos taken on the ship, etc... Alternatively to using a smartphone, passengers can use the touch screens around the ship. The wearable bracelet will allow parents to track where there children are on the ship (via their bracelets), as long as they are in public areas (there are no sensors in private areas such as cabins).
The app will also tell passengers where the ship is. It allows passengers to make payments an book excursions. It was also rolled out on the MSC Seaside which launched in December 2017, and the plan is to roll it out to all of MSC's fleet.
Expect MSC's photographers to be around snapping pictures of you with the Captain, dancing and pretty much anywhere you might be on the ship. The pictures are prices, but worth it. Here's a collage of photos which Marie Hattingh shared with us after her cruise from Cape Town to Durban on the MSC Opera:
And here's a photo of Marie with the captain:

On all international cruises an experience must be chosen (Northbound and Southbound cruises count as international, so an experience must be chosen):

Fantastica Experience: Includes everything on Bella plus upper deck cabins - category B2, Is and O2 cabins (check with your agent what's available at the time of booking), change your booking details (departure dates/passenger names) possibly at a cost and terms & conditions apply, discount on gym classes and personal training, be closer to the front of the queue for your choice of dining time, and be pampered with room service all day & night.
Aurea Experience: Includes everything on Bella and Fantastica, but not Wellness. Includes a massage, welcome cocktail, freedom to change your booking details, category B3 or S3 cabin, priority boarding can arrive and eat at any time you want to (don't need to pre-book).

About movement and nutrition, and get a personal trainer, there are unique excursions for those who choose the Wellness package, as well as unlimited mineral water and a daily complimentary sports drink. MSC partnered with a company called Technogym. Not available in China or South Africa.
12 July 2014 : MSC Cruises becomes the first cruise company in the world to offer a 24/7 pediatric telemedicine service. The doctors on board the ships will be able to contact specialist pediatricians any time for a second opinion.
MSC Cruises seduces its guests with the taste and flavour of Italian cuisine, as well as offering sumptuous dishes of international flavours, to satisfy any palate. There are also a la carte options, with exotic foods such as sushi available, upon reserving a table. Best of all, guests will also get to savour dishes typical of the countries they visit. They have added a variety of Indian dishes, which have been especially appreciated by vegetarians.
Do you have specific diet requirements, for particular conditions and allergies, or simply because you are a vegetarian? MSC Cruises has considered this, and has asked their Chefs to develop a variety of customised meals, designed specifically for your personal needs.
Guests will be able to choose from a vast range of menus, including a menu created specifically for children at the main restaurant. At the buffet there is a kids corner.

MSC Cruises provides the perfect setting for a special ceremony on board. For couples wishing to celebrate their wedding, renew their vows or simply declare their love in the uniquely romantic setting of the high seas, MSC Cruises would be happy to organise a symbolic ceremony on one of their ships. Imagine holding the event at an exclusive and romantic location on a cruise...it is a dream come true. (All Ceremonies onboard are symbolic and are not legally binding).
MSC Cruises offers three different types of packages that are available on all MSC Cruise destinations around the world. It is best to pre-book in order to confirm a specific date.
Care is taken to make sure it's a truly memorable day and that every requirement is met. MSC's Wedding planner will contact the guests before the cruise to plan the ceremony with them. They could even invite their friends and family, to make it an even more memorable experience.
If it's your anniversary, birthday or some other special occasion whilst on board then be sure to let reception know, so that they can arrange for a special treat or cake (there is an extra charge).

People are what make MSC Cruises so successful and memorable. Their highly qualified staff are dedicated to providing guests with a great service; this, and their well-known Italian hospitality and charm, makes a holiday onboard their ships a truly memorable one. The staff work very hard, are pleasant, try to remember your name and greet you with a smile.
MSC Cruises is THE truly Italian cruise line with the most modern fleet in the world, designed to exceed every expectation.
Your every need can be taken care of no matter how large or small, nothing is too much trouble for the friendly MSC staff.
As an example, here's the warm welcome letter we got from MSC, before our cruise on the Opera:
"Dear Traveller, I would like to thank you for choosing the beautiful MSC OPERA, a stunning ship offering the best of cutting−edge technology, the glamour of the golden age of sea travel and a full itinerary of inspiring destinations. Before you embark on your voyage of discovery with us, allow me to take a moment to share our story with you; a story which begins over 300 years ago in Sorrento with one family and their first venture into seafaring. This family learnt many things from the sea and, slowly but surely, their experience grew into expertise. A few ships turned into many and they soon became one of the world's largest shipping groups. However, we have never forgotten where we come from and are proud to remain a family company. Born in the Mediterranean, these roots continue to inspire every journey we make. As soon as you step on board our ships you will be greeted by traditional Mediterranean hospitality. You will experience the region's celebrated values of authenticity, warmth and humanity and feel the Mediterranean spirit which reminds us that good food is a way of life and that following your heart is just as important as following your head. As you explore some of the most beautiful places on earth with MSC's masters of the sea, I am certain that you will come to share in our unique philosophy; that life should be measured in moments, not minutes, and that each of these moments should be savoured. I, along with my crew and staff, look forward to welcoming you on board MSC OPERA and to introducing you to our Mediterranean way of life. Pierfrancesco Vago, Executive Chairman MSC Cruises, Geneva HQ"
The Mediterranean Shipping Company formally started life in 1970, when Gianlucci Aponte bought a ship called the Patricia. MSC Cruises was originally formed as Lauro Lines, when Gianlucci Aponte acquired Starlauro, a one-ship cruise line whose fleet consisted of the Achille Lauro.
MSC offers a wide range of cocktails, both alcoholic and non-alcoholic, on the ship; however you are not allowed to take any alcohol on board with you. Be sure to look out in your program to see if they have a demonstration of how to make the cocktails, like this showboating on an MSC Opera cruise from Cape Town to Mossel Bay:
There are a limited range of beers available onboard - Heineken is a favourite:
Are you looking for a vacation which will rejuvenate your body, mind and spirit? MSC Cruise ships come with full spa and relaxation facilities - wellness centres - where, some time between a relaxing massage and a purifying sauna, you will be able to leave behind all the stress accumulated during the year, and regenerate you body and mind. What better time to make for the spa and relax?
You can enjoy beauty therapy treatments, do your hair or nails, or simply relax in the hands of MSC's Bali masseuses, for a satisfying spa and relax experience. Then be invigorated by some exercise in the gym with one of the MSC instructors or take part in one of the new yoga classes onboard the MSC Fantasia or MSC Splendida.
We are often asked what the wall plugs are on board MSC cruise ships. It's easiest to explain with a photo:

The MSC Lirica boasts a traditional but elegant feel making the passengers feel very comfortable throughout their cruise. The cosmopolitan atmostphere is reflected at two of the lounges onboard the ship: the Beverley Hills bar and the Lord Nelson pub. The meals at the restaurants are said to be tradtional Mediterranean dishes with an international influence. If you feel the need to be pampered, take time to relax at the Lirica Health Centre, which offers beauty and spa treatments. The floor-to-ceiling windows offer magnificent sea views.

MSC Divina
In May 2012, a divine new ship heads out into the ocean. The MSC Divina is the third of the Fantasia-class cruise ships and will be even more breathtaking than her predecessors, the MSC Fantasia and the MSC Splendida. In Southern Africa we have experienced the MSC Rhapsody, MSC Melody (which have now left our waters), MSC Opera, and now the MSC Sinfonia and MSC Musica (end of 2018).
Sophia Loren christened this incredible ship during May 2012. If it was good enough for this silver screen goddess, it's most certainly good enough for me.
