A few tips to help you hire the cheapest car: (1) If you're willing to pay a bit more for a bit more luxury, please mention this under special requests; (2) Avoid picking up & dropping off the vehicle at different spots, as this pushes costs up, and last but note least.
Car Rental Agencies
The main car rental agencies are Avis car hire, Europcar (previously Imperial), Hertz, Tempest, First Car Rental, Budget, Sani Car Rental (was Thrifty Car Rental) and Woodford.
Their main bases are at the airports - Cape Town International Airport (CPT), Bloemfontein Airport (BFN, Braam Fischer), OR Tambo International (JNB, Johannesburg), Lanseria International Airport (HLA, Johannesburg), Port Elizabeth Airport (PLZ), East London Airport (ELS), Kruger Mpumalanga International Airport (MQP, Nelspruit), Skukuza Airport, Hoedspruit Airport, King Shaka International Airport (DUR, Durban), Richards Bay Airport, Upington Airport and Kimberley Airport. The larger agencies also have a presence in the downtown and suburbs, as well as the smaller towns.

Criminal activity
Criminals like targetting lone travellers at airports, who are carrying laptops. One of their methods is to follow the person to their hotel, and break into the vehicle whilst the person checks in at the hotel. We recommend hiring a sedan rather than a hatchback, so that goods can be more safely locked in the trunk/boot.
