In this week's survey, we investigated the prices to travel from Cape Town to Durban at the start of the school holidays. As we approach the festive season, air and bus fares increase, with the cheapest flight that we found being R1 189 with Mango (prices will change). Shosholoza Meyl's tourist class train is sold out for December and January, meaning that travellers will have to opt for the economy class train to take advantage of the more affordable mode of transport. Europcar offered the cheapest daily car hire prices for renting a car from King Shaka Airport.
Events in Durban
The Umhlanga Summer Carnival kicks off on Monday the 10th of December and will run until Sunday the 23rd of December. The carnival will feature fun-filled days of outdoor and beach activities for all ages, including surfing, trail-running, beauty pageants, carols by candlelight and a street party.

Car Hire in Durban
We looked at the prices of car hire at King Shaka International Airport from 21h00 on Friday the 7th of December 2012 until 13h00 on Sunday the 9th of December 2012. Europcar offered the cheapest rates for the weekend's rental with a Kia Picanto or similar at R384 (R192 per day). (Prices can change).
