Flight path from Johannesburg to Bangkok

The live view of Bangkok's air traffic seen above is brought to you courtesy of the cutting edge technology of flightradar24.com

We recommend staying at the Oriental Residence in Bangkok, which has views over the US embassy garden, is situated a 15m walk from a Sky Train station, a 10m walk to the Central shopping store and a 15m walk from the Erwan Shrine. Have dinner at the next door Mondopop. Make use of the pool. The high corner suites give you the best views, with those overlooking the gardens being more serene.

2013-07-19 Rating 5/5 : My next trip would take me to inviting Bangkok. Here my trip would be without incident, or so I thought. My friend and I landed at the airport thankfully to be told that a taxi was waiting for us. Before we knew it, we were thoroughly enjoying a much needed massage in our luxurious hotel room. Then it was off to get something to eat as opposed to eating at the hotel. Got to be adventurous is what we told ourselves. Ten minutes into trudging the pavements we were seated at a pavement / mall restaurant! Here we were entertained by the local buskers and musicians. The following day we were up very early as we were heading to shop. We started at the malls which we found to be too expensive as the same or even brand names were cheaper on the street. The communication between the taxi drivers and ourselves didn't go so well. It was a mission trying to explain where we wanted to go. The language barrier created a rift. As we tried a certain destination and our cab driver insisted on taking us to a beautiful jewellery store first that we would like. Obviously he got a commission for taking customers there. We didn't want to be rude so we obliged. It was on our return trip when our nightmare began. Our taxi driver could not comprehend where our hotel was. After what seemed like an eternity (1 hour) we found ourselves stranded on the highway. Eventually we managed to flag down another taxi who delivered us safely to our apartment after off- course asking for extra money as that was not a straight route as he put it. Our next adventure was the next night when we decided to experience night shopping as we had heard it was huge phenomena in that part of the world. We walked past several stalls of clothing/ornaments/linen and bought a trinket or two. Then we came across an interesting stall where scantily clad women were trying to entice us to enter for entertainment. This was something we had heard about where tourists were plied with alcohol until delirious, thereby wracking up huge bills and if they decided not to pay in they were thrown in jail. So we gave that one a miss. Flight was with which along with South african Airways is my favourite.

Andy in Bangkok

Andy caught a with SAA (when they still used to fly there): "I walked in and around a large market where I discovered an assortment of counterfeit clothes, shoes, watches, jewellery and other property. The “fake” women were discovered that night...After watching some chaps knock the hell out of each other (kickboxing), I went along to explore the infamous Khao San Road...A German tourist told me that not all the girls were girls. I found this unbelievable as the ladies in the booze bus / bar behind me looked like real damsels in distress from fa." Here's a photo of him posing with a lady with a strong grip and deep voice! To escape Bangkok Andy caught an overnight train down to Surat Thani, a springboard to the islands, and then a ferry to Ko Somui where he stayed in a hut at Lamai Beach.

Visa-free

At the time of writing no visa was required for South African passport holders to visit Thailand (double-check with the embassy before you depart, as these things have a nasty habit of changing).

Compulsory listening for a trip to Bangkok

"...One night in Bangkok and the world's your oyster, The bars are temples but the pearls ain't free. You'll find a god in every golden cloister, And if you're lucky then the God's a she. I can feel an angel sliding up to me...

You're talking to a tourist whose every move's among the purest, I get my kicks above the waistline, sunshine...

One night in Bangkok makes a hard man humble, Not much between despair and ecstasy. One night in Bangkok and the tough guys tumble, Can't be too careful with your company, I can feel the devil walking next to me..."

Mae Vang Elephant Camp

Somebody shared that the best experience they had in Thailand, was when a baby elephant slept with him! This was at Mae Vang Elephant Camp about an hour outside of Chiang Mai. "This baby was six weeks old, still drinking milk from it's mother. It ran right up to me and wouldn't stop trying to cuddle. Eventually I sat down at which point it laid down on top of me (stepping on my balls in the process) and went to sleep. The mother kept a watchful eye, patting me with her trunk as I lay beneath her feet (a terrifying place to be), but was overall cool with me."
