All hotels suffer from the issues bedevilling Zimbabwe. Your best option is probably the Meikles, situated in the centre of Harare. Ask for a room looking onto the Africa Unity Square to see the view of flower vendors. Try the La Fontaine restaurant. |
There are BA Comair, SAA, Air Zimbabwe and SA Airlink flights from Johannesburg to Harare (all from OR Tambo, there are no flights from Lanseria Airport to Harare). Compare airline prices to find the cheapest JNB - HRE flight price (use the flight price comparison tool on the left). If you've got more time and you're flexible about dates, it's worthwhile to get on the airlines' mailing lists, and wait for them to email out offers for cheap flights. Flights leaving on Fridays are usually more expensive (everybody wants to get away at the start of the weekend or get back from business trips).
Protectionism on JNB-HRE route11 Jul 2013. Ever wonder why flight prices from Johannesburg to Harare are so high? Look no further than the bilateral agreement between the South African and Zimbabwean governments which restricts competition on the route. It's a great gig for the entrenched airlines but obviously terrible for the consumer. The governments of Zimbabwe and South Africa like the situation, as it protects their flag carriers (SAA & Air Zimbabwe) from competition - essentially a hidden tax on travellers. It's also hard on airlines which aren't connected lucky enough to be one of the entrenched operators. Take Flywell Airline in Zimbabwe for instance - this airline operates as Zimbabwe Airlink (in partnership with SA Airlink) and is chomping at the bit to fly the Johannesburg to Harare route, but the ministry wont permit it, and they're quite upfront about the fact that this is to protect Air Zimbabwe: "since Air Zimbabwe is on a rebuilding exercise, it is not possible at this stage to open the Harare-Johannesburg route to competition," says Zimbabwe's Acting Secretary for Transport, Valentine Sinemani.
9 Apr 2013. Johannesburg to Harare flights are resumed, in preperation for the Zimbabwe International Trade Fair.
12 Dec 2012. Air Zimbabwe increases its JNB-HRE flight frequency to daily, and switches from Boeing 767's to Airbus A320s.
5 Nov 2012. Air Zimbabwe reintroduces JNB - Harare flights; with 4 weekly flights on Sunday, Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. Flights are scheduled to leave Joburg at 20h00 & land in HRE at 20h45.
9 Oct 2012. SAA changes its SA024 night flights from leaving at 19h40 to leaving at 16h20, due to low visibility at nighttime.
4 Apr 2012. BA was meant to introduce three additional Johannesburg to Harare flights on Wednesdays, Thursdays & Sundays (leaving JNB at 18h40, arriving HRE at 20h20). On 3 April 2012 Comair said that "We have applied for the additional 3 frequencies to Harare (this is a bilaterally constrained route) and will be having our hearing before the licencing council quite soon. We hope to be in a position to add these flights to our schedule should we be successful in securing these rights."
10 Mar 2012. BA passengers must check in at domestic departures for JNB-HRE flights.
Mar 2011. 1time airline has applied for landing slots in Harare.
22 Mar 2011. Air Zim pilots go on strike for non-payment of allowances, resulting in the cancellation of Harare-Johannesburg flights.
