Along with the steadily growing economic ties between South Africa and Mozambique, we have seen a growing number of flights between Johannesburg and Nampula, in the north of the country. It's still only Airlink offering flights from Johannesburg to Nampula (Mozambique), now 6 days a week from Monday to Friday and on Sundays. The flight takes about 2.5 hours and is in smaller aircraft, so expect a slightly bumpier ride.

  • 4 Nov 2012. Airlink already flies Mondays to Fridays, and is adding a Sunday flight to its JNB-Nampula schedule, which is scheduled to leave Joburg at 11h05 and land in Nampula at 13h35. Flights are in Embraer ERJ135 planes. "The Nampula route services the growing industrial agricultural and commercial development in the region as well we providing access to the port city of Nacala at which a deep water bulk terminal is being constructed. The destination has also seen a growing leisure market for Coral Lodge and Nuarro Lodge situated near Ilha de Mozambique, 175km from the capital Province, Nampula." said Airlink's Marketing PRO, Jason Werdmüller von Elgg.

  • 3 Oct 2012. It seems like the Nampula destination is growing in popularity. Once again Airlink is increasing its frequencies, this time adding a flight on Wednesdays to the schedule (it currently flies on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays & Fridays). In a statement Airlink said that "The Nampula destination has been seeing increasing interest following the significant industrial agricultural and commercial development in close proximity to the port city of Nacala at which a deep water bulk terminal is being constructed.  The region also serves the growing leisure market for Coral Lodge and Nuarro Lodge."

  • 1 Sep 2011. Airlink increases its Johannesburg - Nampula flight frequency from 3 to 4 flights a week. The extra flight is on Thursday, complementing the current schedule of Mondays, Tuesdays and Fridays. All flights are scheduled to leave Joburg at 11h05 and arrive in Nampula at 13h35, and are flown in Emraer 135 37 seat jets.

Road trip

An overland trip from Johannesburg to Nampula is some 2304km or 31 hours; taking you through Louis Trichardt, Masvingo, Harare, Tete, the southern bit of Malawi and Gure.
