  • From the 7th December 2013 all flights to Mthatha Airport must have military authorisation. From 13 to 14 Dec 2013, in the runup to Nelson Mandela's funeral, no commercial flights are allowed to Mthatha Airport, except for Airlink's scheduled and charter flights. On 15 December 2013 no commercial flights are allowed into Mthatha whatsoever.

  • 1 October 2012. Airlink begins using Embraer ERJ135 jets on the JNB - Mthatha route, shortening the trip from 1h40m to 1 hour: "The positive passenger growth is attributed to growing interest in this region both as a tourist destination and its increasing influence as one of the important hubs in the Eastern Cape."
