Roadtrip to East London & 10 Days Holiday

Alas our 5am journey from Pietermaritzburg to East London does not involve a quick 1 hour flight on SA Express from Durban but a 600 kilometre car journey through the rolling hills of KwaZulu Natal and the Eastern Cape. The scenery consists mainly of rural settlements, grazing livestock and big blue sky. Our stops on the way are Engen/Onestop Kokstad, Umtata Ultra City and the Kei Bridge stop the only ablutions deemed clean enough to brave. We arrive at our accommodation in Glen Gariff, a small coastal settlement about 40 kilometres outside East London, just after midday. It's close enough when the city lights beckon and far enough from the city to ensure spectacular, clear night skies and welcome silence. After unpacking and a lunch of leftover "padkos" we head into town for some supplies. Our destination is the Vincent Park Mall where a myriad of shops ensure we get everything from the boerewors for the braai to sunscreen. Afterwards we make our way to the Hemmingway Casino complex for a delicious milkshake and peruse the movie line up for the week ahead to see if anything catches our fancy. We decide to come in for "A Night in the Museum" later in the week. Then its back to Glengariff for a real South African braai and a few hours of shooting stars and satellite watching in the awesomely clear sky. We enjoy a few days of total relaxation, sunny skies and beach by day, braai fires and stars by night. Until the city draws us closer....We decide on an outing to the East London Zoo which we are sure will prove entertaining and educational for adults and children alike. We are not disappointed, the children are enthralled by the lone giraffe and both in awe of and terrified of the magnificent tigers in their enclosure. Other creatures such as the chimpanzees and the many birds ensure we while away a couple of pleasant hours. Later we treat ourselves to an excellent al fresco seafood lunch at Ballyhoo, on Latimer's Landing in the East London Harbour, where we eagerly watch the activities of small craft passing by. We head to town for more grocery shopping, then it's home for an early night after an exciting day in East London. The following day dawns cool and decidedly damp, certainly not beach weather so the family decide to make the best of it and venture back to see other city attractions. This time we make our way to the East London museum, where an interesting few hours are had by all. The window on a live bee hive grasps the childrens’ imagination as does the preserved coelacanth. My favourite display is the extensive collection of beautiful Xhosa beadwork. Another noteworthy highlight is the extensive maritime display especially enjoyed by my husband. Our next stop is the East London Aquarium where the many tanks housing interesting creatures keep us occupied before we enjoy a highly entertaining seal show. We also encounter other marine birds such as penquins and an enormous pelican, a first for all of us. Tired but happy we head to our cottage to enjoy our last few days on the beach. We head back home after a fantastic 10 days in the Buffalo City, we still have so much to see and encounter. We will definitely be back! We never did find time to see that movie……..Fran Willmore
