Kulula Cape Town - Johannesburg

12 Apr 2010

We'd booked our 1time flights from Johannesburg to Livingstone, but we still needed to find a way to get from Cape Town to Johannesburg. For once our timing was good, and we could take advantage of a Kulula flight sale to buy our tickets (isn't it wonderful flying budget carriers on both legs of the trip).

Check-in at Cape Town International

We used Excite Taxis again for our airport transfer to Cape Town International, costing R180 (from Pinelands). We arrived at CPT at dusk and tipped a porter R15 to take our luggage from the vehicle to Kulula's check in counters. Ten out of ten to Kulula check-in staff. He gave us great seats near the front of plane taking cognisance of the fact that we had a toddler with us. Then he gave our toddler a green fizzer sweet. This made up for the longer than usual check-in queue. Take-off was 10 minutes late.

Don't drink your own alcohol

I don't think the Kulula crew were joking when they announced: "Passengers, just a reminder that you may not drink your own alcohol on the flight".

I love Khuluma

I'm loving the Kulula-in-flight magazine, Khuluma. Their stroke of brilliance was using stand-up-comedians as guest editors. In the April edition it was Nik Rabinowitz doing the editing, a self-proclaimed "Jewish speaking Xhosa comedian", here's some of Nik's quips:

  • "The picture of me with a black eye was taken after my interview with rugby coach Peter the Puppet. He took offence to some of my questions, hit me with a left hook and eye-gouged me. Hey, nobody said rugby was ballet."

  • Nik ased Peter Puppet whether the Springbos success had anything to do with him: "Ag, you know. I've always said that the Springboks' success is due to 73% effort of the players, 42% coaching and roughly 3% eye-gouging."

Overnight at O.R. Tambo

We were flying at the crack of dawn the next day with 1time to Livingstone, so caught a shuttle bus to the Southern Sun O.R. Tambo.

Return flight was delayed

At the last moment Kulula delayed our return flight to Cape Town by 30m and then made an announcement that the flight was delayed "indefinitely" (which gives one a bit of a shock) and then eventually we took off 50m late.

What we paid for the outbound flights

For the outbound flight the cost was R399 each for the 3 tickets, but we only paid R99 each because we had saved up some Kulula moolah by using Kulula credit cards (you would know of this trick if you'd been reading our tips for cheap flights in South Africa).

What we paid for the return flights

The return flight from Johannesburg to Cape Town was R2757, but we had R700 Kulula moolah, so ended up paying R2057 or R686 each.

Kulula flagged the following as being "Important information":

  • Use your ID or drivers license with the booking reference (above left) to check in for your flight/s.

  • Check in 90 minutes prior to your flights scheduled departure time.

  • Read the important travel information section within this document.
Alternatively visit kulula.com's 'info and customer care' page for more info and travel queries.

  • Be green, and only print this if you need to and help us save a tree.

Other travel info

Bring your booking reference and ID book, drivers license or passport to check-in at the airport for your flight/s.

Check-in

Check-in opens 90 min before take-off and closes sharply 30 min before your flight. It's not a good idea to check-in valuables like cameras, money, jewellery or anything else that's important to you.

Baggage

Effective 06 May 2009, you're allowed a free checked baggage weight up to a maximum of 20kg. Any excess weight over 20kg will cost an additional R25 per kilo at the Airport. Excess baggage may be purchased at reduced rates (up to 50% discount) up to 24 hours prior to departure via our website or Contact Centre. Excess baggage is non-refundable after payment - so consider carefully before adding extra weight to your booking.

Infant's baggage
For tickets purchased on or after 08 April 2009, infants under the age of 2 years are charged R50 per trip. Tickets purchased prior 08 April 2009 are not subject to this fee nor are they entitled to the 10kg free checked baggage allowance. For R50, you get to take 1 x checked bag weighing up to 10kg plus a collapsible pushchair and a child car seat.

Changing your booking

If you need to make any changes to this booking, it's best to do it online at least 48 hours before your flight. Just remember that no route or name changes will be permitted on Lusaka, Windhoek, Harare, Mauritius or Ndola flights, but if you're already at the airport, go to the Ticket Sales office. Changing your flight at the airport and through the Contact Centre will cost R140 per person, per sector, plus the difference between your old fare and the new one available. If you can't make your flight, please don't forget to contact us more than 48 hours before scheduled departure to change your booking to another date, cause if you miss it without changing it first, you'll lose the full value of your ticket. What a waste!

Dangerous articles

Dangerous articles (such as compressed gases, corrosives, explosives, flammable liquids and solids, radioactive materials, oxidising materials, poisons and infectious substances) must not be carried in baggage. Ask us if you are unsure what items are regarded as dangerous, 'cause we can't allow you to travel with this sort of stuff in your bags.

Unaccompanied minors

Kids under 12 have to travel with at least one adult aged 16 years or older and unfortunately we don't accept unaccompanied minors, sorry.
