We're planning on holding an investment cruise, but are first testing the water (forgive the pun) to check the level of interest. Would this interest you? And if so, what type of topics would you like to see covered - e.g. retirement savings options, living annuities, no retirement savings, online trading, etc... If you're interested then reply to this email or click here to subscribe (for free) to the investment newsletter.
Are you losing out? Free Retirement Savings Check-up
One of the speakers for the 2018 Investment Cruise, Rob who is an investment actuary, has offered to do a free check-up to see whether he can do anything to make your retirement savings more efficient (free checkup, but if you choose to implement it - totally your choice - this will cost...see details below). Some new and more effficient products have come onto the market in the last couple of years.
It's been a while since I last wrote, and I do hope all is well, financially and otherwise - at least I hope your finances are heading in a better direction than the country's! The implications of the economic direction and the best defensive investment strategy are things we must think about, but today I want to focus on portfolio efficiency - making sure that you're not overpaying on administration, investment management or advisor fees.
Even if you think everything is running smoothly, it's good to send your car in for a service regularly. So even if you think nothing's wrong, email me the details of your current retirement savings setup and I'll check for free whether I can improve on it (and by retirement savings I include "living annuities"). In many cases I believe I will be able to improve things.
Which company's investment platform your retirement savings is being made through.
Each investment portfolio's name as well as the fees being charged, and the amount of savings in it.
Fees to your current investment advisor.
Investment Platform: Allan Gray; 0.5% on first R1.5m, 0.2% on next R3.5m, 0.1% on balance over R5m; for Allan Gray investment portfolios the plaform fee is 0.2% admin fee which is built into the unit price.
R1m in the Allan Gray Balanced Fund; for fees see https://www.allangray.co.za/globalassets/documents-repository/fund/factsheet/Allan%20Gray%20Balanced%20Fund/Latest/Allan%20Gray%20Balanced%20Fund%20Latest.pdf
R2m in the Foord Balanced Fund, for fees see https://www.allangray.co.za/globalassets/documents-repository/fund/factsheet/Foord%20Balanced%20Fund%20(Class%20B4)/Latest/Foord%20Balanced%20Fund%20(Class%20B4)%20Latest.pdf
In most cases I should be able to tell you fairly rapidly whether your current setup is sub-optimum. However, in some cases, it will take a while; especially if you're invested in an old style insurance policy with transfer penalties.
Step 2 : Implementing Improvements
Plato said that 'The beginning is the most important part of the work', but I disagree - in my experience the follow-through is the most important phase.
It's completely up to you whether you'd like to implement any improvements I suggest, and there will be zero upfront fee. The only thing I ask, is that you agree upfront that if you implement the improvements I suggest that you offer me a per annum advisor's fee at a level you believe is fair & affordable. If at any point you're not satisfied, you can reduce the fee to zero whenever you want. I will only do the work if I believe that you are better off, taking into account the advisor's fee.
