The weather around Hong Kong is improving as Tropical Storm Utors moves on; but there's still gusting winds & it is possible for there to be delays & diversions for individual flights. When this went to print today's Cathay Pacific flight from Johannesburg to Hong Kong was expected to take off from OR Tambo on schedule, but obviously one should monitor the flight status during the day.

Interesting writeup on "How I got a free upgrade to 1st Class" - was an Emirates flight, and the main things were (1) being an Emirates Gold Card Holder, arriving early at check-in, being polite, and not asking for the upgrade!

Kulula Cape Town to OR Tambo review: On 6 August 2013, my 17 month old grandson, Carlyle and I flew from Cape Town International at 19h10 to OR Tambo to visit my sister for Eid Mubarak. What an amazing experience from the time we hopped onto the airport bus until we arrived in Johannesburg. A friendly Kulula staff member assisted us with getting my grandson and his stroller onto the bus as I was unable to do it alone. They greeted us with such warm and welcoming smiles at the plane, then folded the stroller and ensured us that it would be waiting and ready for me when we exit the plane at OR Tambo – and it was. We were given a window seat which made me very happy as my grandson could enjoy his first flight experience observing everything he could see through the window – such as the airplanes and traffic at the airport as well as the city lights below as we left Cape Town and arrived in Johannesburg. A kind air hostess approached me and asked if it was my first flight with a toddler. When I said it was it is, she proceeded in explaining to me personally what the safety precautions/regulations are with regard to toddlers. I was so surprised and thankful as I am very pedantic when it comes to any matter of safety, especially that of my grandson. I was impressed. My grandson also enjoyed paging through the in plane booklet. Because of Kulula, my grandson had a wonderful first flight experience. We had a good flight and I am very appreciative of the assistance I received from the Kulula attendants.

It's financial reporting season:

Cathay Pacific
has released its 2013 interim results to 30 June 2013. Turnover is marginally down, but they've managed to switch from a HK$929m loss to a HK$24m profit. The airline cites an improvement in the passenger business being offset by weak demand for air cargo & the high price of jet fuel. Its introduction of a premier economy class in 2012 has improved yields. Cathay Pacific continue to invest in new planes, having taken delivery during the 6 months of 2 A330-300s, 3 B777-300ERs & a B747-8F. The airline also retired 4 B747-400s.

Thai Airways released their financials for the quarter ending 30 June 2013. They highlight tougher competition from middle-eastern carriers, lower demand for air cargo (as a result of weakness in the EU economy) and a stable fuel price as being key factors. Thai Airways are on track for their plan to retire 16 planes in 2013 and add 17 new planes (including three A380-800s). Although Thai Airways increased its revenue by 2%, they still ran a loss of THB5bn.
