HOT AIR BALLOONING

A double header today - we bring you (1) the launch of Fly Go-Air & (2) Kulula Lucky Dip flights (scroll down to see).

Cruise news: From R17,320 for 2 outside cabins for 3 adults & 2 children on OP013, the 7 Jan 2013 MSC Opera cruise to Maputo & Inhambane.

Fly Go-Air now open for business

Fly Go-Air is the brainchild of Rajesh Sivsanker, who is its Chief Executive Officer. Initially the plan was to launch flights from Pietermaritzburg, until presumably it was realised that the economics don't make so much sense, and the airline is now going to be based at Johannesburg's Lanseria Airport (Ed: With e-tolls back in play, Lanseria Airport is a smart choice for those wanting to go to Sandton, as you can avoid the e-tolls on the back roads).

Lanseria to Kruger

The initial route is from Lanseria to Nelspruit's Kruger Mpumalanga International Airport, with the inaugural flight taking off on the 15th November 2012. Since British Airways suspended their Johannesburg - Nelspruit flights in February, it's only been South African Express flying the route (although Fedair does shuttle flights to the lodges in the Kruger), so we were delighted to hear that Fly Go-Air would be adding some competition. Flight prices from Lanseria to the Kruger Mpumalanga International Airport start at R999 one-way, and you can book up to the 30th of January 2013. Flights are Mondays to Fridays, on Saturdays there is only a Lanseria to Kruger flight, and on Sundays only a Kruger to Lanseria flight.

Planes

It's not yet known what aircraft Fly Go-Air will be using on the Lanseria - Kruger route, but they will be leasing the planes (it's not known from whom). The rumour is they'll be Embraer 135 aircraft.

Meals & drinks

Fly Go-Air is not following the low cost carrier model - they will be offering free meals and drinks on their flights.

Lanseria to Polokwane

From the 14th January 2013 Fly Go-Air is launching its second route, from Lanseria to Polokwane Airport. Currently it's just Airlink flying that route, so their entry brings much-needed competition. Flights are scheduled to leave Lanseria at 15h30 each weekday and to return from Polokwane at 08h30 the following weekday.

London flight prices
Hopefully we'll be back to exploring London's magical streets soon! South Africa is currently on the UK's Red List, which means only British nationals are allowed to travel from South Africa to the UK and then they have to complete 10 days quarantine in a hotel. There are no direct flights connecting South Africa to the UK currently.

‘Sea Shadow’ is Abu Dhabi's first locally produced movie, and you can watch it onboard Emirates, Etihad, flydubai, Oman Air, and Qatar Airways on their in-flight entertainment systems. Are you in Cape Town over New Years and wondering what to do? Pigalle is a favourite restaurant. When we reviewed it there was a live band playing, and it has a bit of a cruise-ship feel to it. They're throwing a New Year's Eve 2012 party, on .... (you know what date!). No under 14's.

The Avro RJ-85, which Air Botswana purchased from Lufthansa, has arrived in Botswana.

On 31 October Air Botswana commences flights from Lanseria to Gaborone.

The Purple shall rule! Daniel MacArthur wrote a bit about his flight from Port Elizabeth to Bloemfontein, which was part of his training to get a Commercial Pilot's License:
- "I watch the roads and towns go by and think to myself "who in their right mind would live out here?!""
- "I pass over the only interesting thing on this flight, Gariep dam, and I'm still shocked at how big it is."

The Bottom Line: Ashok Khemba, a bureaucrat in India, simply cannot tolerate corruption. He has been hounded out of his office 43 times for fighting graft. In every job he takes he does his best to ensure everybody follows the rules and whistleblows if they don't - this does not always go down well with his bosses.
