HOT AIR BALLOONING

Air Zimbabwe has been placed under judicial management, and may face liquidation. This follows an application by several unions demanding that arrear salaries be paid.

SAA March 2012 flight prices

Sometimes it's nice to pay a bit more & fly on a full service carrier - British Airways or SAA. Here's the cheapest one-way South African Airways flights on each day in March 2012. This isn't an official SAA flight special. Book at SAA, but first compare flight prices. Prices will change (perhaps even by the time you receive this).

The Purple shall rule! We really got egg on our face (or was it Mango?) for the error in yesterday's newsletter on Mango vouchers. There is obviously no such date as the 31st February (in fact we're lucky to even have 29 days in February this month), it should have been the 31st March that you must travel by. Our much-loved readers had a field day pointing this out, and I was particularly delighted by the following email in which a reader going by the name "M" (possibly the head of MI6?) speculated on the cause of the error:

"I think this could possibly be a severe case of "mango-intitis" , a very rare, but very real case of consuming too many "mangoes" in one sitting. The common symptoms are as follows:

1. A serias tummy bug that leaves one holding either side of the "toilet pan" raising both legs, whilst seated, which almost resembles a "wingless" plane in full flight. If that makes any sense at all.

2. Temporary amnesia. More so with calendar days. Cases have been reported where people were spotted celebrating Easter in August.

3. One mango without peel contains 1.06 grams of protein, 135 calories and 3.7 grams of dietary fiber. Maybe over consumption is the real problem.

I suggest you try some of the other the SA(A) fruit. Some you get only "1time" in the year, and others have a "velvet" look and feel. Don't forget to pay your "mula" well in advance to get the best deal. Not sure if they are all part of the same family tree. I mean who really knows these days."

The Bottom Line: The shortage of electricity is probably the major short-term factor holding back economic growth in South Africa (e.g. you cant build smelters if there's no additional electricity to run them). This is getting attention and will be resolved in the medium term.

However, what are the long run prospects for energy? The US Energy projection has a reference case of oil rising to $120 per barrel by 2016, and $145 per barrel by 2035 (in 2010 dollars), with a wide range of uncertainty about this.
