The Tops is a dual bed and breakfast or self-catering guest house perched on the way up to the Map of Africa in Wilderness (Western Cape, South Africa).
We chose The Tops for our Easter 2009 holiday, as it seemed the best self-catering option offering offering wireless internet (an essential requirement for our business must go on...even during holidays) - in Wilderness you either want to stay right at the beachfront or high up with a view, and The Tops offered lovely views. With the sound of the waves breaking and the birds tweeting, we had some awesome nights sleeping (although one in our party of 7 didn't like the feel of the pillows). Whilst braaing in the evening, 3 very friendly forktailed drongos (Dicrurus adsimilis) paid us a visit, whilst we viewed the Pied Crows (Corvus albus) in the distance. At night we saw flat spiders venturing into our room.
It cost an extra R40 for breakfast at the guest house - or if you went to the village you could eat a full breakfast for R29. There was a DSTV decoder, but you had to bring your own card (other only the free channels were available). Our host was friendly (and supremely fit, we saw her at the end of her jog at 8am on Easter Sunday) offering their braai area for our use one night at the very top of The Tops - an alternative would be to go watch TV at the Protea Hotel Wilderness (5 minute walk from The Tops). If we had to criticise anything it was the fact that the towels were slightly small.
We had a good stay and recommend this Wilderness guest house.
