Shearwater on Sea

The first time I heard the name of this establishment I immediately pictured a glassy ocean and calming blue tones - I wasn't far off! The moment you walk through the door and into your tastefully decorated room, you will feel at peace. The ocean plays a big part in calming the nerves, being only 50 metres from Myoli Beach, but the ethos of the people also contributes towards the feeling of contentment - Shearwater on Sea is situated in Sedgefield, the first Slow Town in South Africa - this concept arose in Italy, Cittaslow, and strives to preserve quality of life for all.

Things to do

Shearwater on Sea is a wonderful choice for you to visit whilst exploring the Garden Route, spend a couple of nights, or spend a week, you won't want to leave! It is also located right next to the Goukamma Nature Reserve for day excursions. You are also only about 20 minutes drive away from Knysna, further east down the coast. Try and coincide your visit with the annual Knysna Oyster Festival - I went there last year and it was wonderful. The festival usually takes place during July, but don't be put off by the slightly chilly weather as you will most likely be tucked away in one of the several restaurants, enjoying delicious, fresh oysters! Afterwards you can drive back to your cosy apartment at Shearwater on Sea and enjoy the view of the setting sun.

So you see, Shearwater on Sea is the perfect place to relax and unwind. There is much to do for the folks who enjoy watersports, including waterskiing, paragliding and boating. If you enjoy birdwatching, you're in luck! The lagoon attracts many different bird species and there is also abundant Fynbos to delight the eye and attract other small animals, such as the protected Angulate tortoises.

There is even a recreational area for children and teenagers, complete with games room, pool table and jungle gym. At night, you can light up a fire on your private balcony and unwind, whilst enjoying the sounds of the ocean.

For a nice adrenaline rush, you can drive for an hour and half to Tsitsikamma National Park and pretend that you're a monkey! I had a fantastic time on the tree top canopy tour, it is very safe and anyone from the age of about 5 to 90 can do it.
