Riebeek Kasteel Accommodation

Riebeek Kasteel is situated in the Western Cape Province of South Africa. It is named after Jan van Riebeek and the Kasteelberg (which it is situated next to). Only an hour's drive from Cape Town, Het Vlok Kasteel is a popular venue for Capetonians to get married in a nearby country setting in the Swartland.

Next to Riebeek Kasteel is Riebeek West...(presumably so named because it lies just to the west of Riebeek Kasteel). Being named with reference to one's geographic proximity to another town could give one somewhat of an inferiority complex. In fact Riebeek West is famous in its own right for being where 2 prime ministers were born - Jan Smuts at Bovenplaas and Daniel Francois (DF) Malan at Allesverloren (which, to be fair, is situated between the 2 villages).

Here's a view of the Kasteelberg from Riebeek Valley Hotel.

Riebeek Kasteel is also home to Red Tin Roof restaurant and guesthouse, which is co-owned by Jacques Pauw, the famous South African investigative journalist, who wrote "The President's Keepers". Interestingly enough, Pauw's former partner at the Vrye Weekblad, also lives in Riebeek-Kasteel.

"Riebeek-Kasteel, surrounded by tanned cornfields and green vineyards, feels as though it is thousands of miles from Gauteng. It is wall-less, tractors full of grapes roar through the village, children play in the streets, and in winter the mist tumbles and tosses down Kasteelberg. The locals are engaging and gentle, and it is the kind of place where Sam and I can live forever." Jacques Pauw.
