Avis training
I got an email about an Avis training course, so jumped at the chance to go on it and learn more about Avis car rental. The course was set up by Avis UK, but a lot of it applies to South Africa. They've split the course into 5 pieces, and after you've mastered one section you get to test your knowledge with a multiple choice questionnaire. After you've finished the course, you get entered into a monthly draw for the chance to win an iPad. Here's my summary of the course (written on 13 April 2011):

Picking up your vehicle
What must you present at Avis? |
Your driver's licence (held for at least a year), credit card and car retnal voucher. |
Why is your credit card swiped? |
For payment, and as security for the non-waivable excess, optional cover, optional services/charges etc... |
What do you have to sign? |
A car rental agreement, including full terms and conditions, and costs to be paid. |
What do you receive? |
A rental vehicle, an Avis wallet with emergency numbers, a copy of the Rental agreement and a courtesy map. |
Must you check for damages? |
The AVIS assistant and customer must check for damages prior to driving the vehicle away. |
Dropping off your vehicle
Is a discount given if the car is returned earlier than planned? |
No |
Should you check for damages? |
Yes, check with an Avis representative for damages when returning the car. |
What if you've damaged the car? |
The excess amount will be charged to your credit card. |
Are you charged for fuel? |
If the petrol tank isn't completely full, then a re-fuelling charge applies. |
How does payment work? |
After returning your rental vehicle; optional cover, services, fuel, excess and local taxes are charged to your credit card. You can settle your account in cash if the Avis office is still open. A statement is set up and sent to your address. |
Avis Insurance
What does Theft Protection cover? |
The cost of replacing the rental vehicle if it gets stolen, above the insurance excess amount. |
What is Third Party Liability Insurance ? |
Insurance in case a 3rd party (somebody else) is injured or has their property damaged. |
What is unlimited mileage? |
Unlimited mileage means there is no additional charge depending on the number of miles driven. |
What is Collision Damage Waiver? |
Collission Damage Waiver covers the cost of repairs (above the insurance excess) if the rental car is damaged. |
What is an Excess? |
If there is an insured event, e.g. an accident or theft of the car, then the renter must pay a certain amount to Avis, which is the Excess. Optional insurances may reduce the Excess (if taken out). |
What is a Super Collision Damage Waiver? |
Reduces the excess if there is damage to the rental vehicle. |
What is a Super Theft Protection? |
Reduces the excess if the car is stolen. |
What is a Personal Accident Insurance? |
It pays for a specific amount of medical expenses cover, accidental death payment and assistance/rescue. |
What is Super Personal Accident Insurance? |
It covers more than the Personal Accident Insurance, including personal effects/baggage and contingency expenses. |
Avis jargon
How are additional drivers added? |
When the vehicle is collected, additional drivers may be added at an extra fee. |
How long must a driver's licence be held for? |
You may not drive an Avis vehicle if you have held your driver's licence for less than a year. |
What additional equipment may be rented? |
Child seats, ski racks, snow chains. |
Are one-way rentals possible? |
Yes, Avis must be informed beforehand and a drop off charge may apply. |
Cann your car be delivered/collected? |
Possibly, this should be checked with Avis at the time of the reservation, and a charge will apply. |
What is Super Personal Accident Insurance? |
It covers more than the Personal Accident Insurance, including personal effects/baggage and contingency expenses. |

What is it?
The Avis Training Academy is a fantastic online resource that will teach you all you need to know about selling car hire. It will enable you to overcome any customer objections you may encounter and give you all the skills you need to sell Avis car rental with real confidence.
How does it work?
The programme is broken down into five interactive modules that you can complete all at once, or in stages at your own pace. Once you have mastered each module, there is a multiple choice questionnaire to test your knowledge. The Avis Training Academy is thorough, interactive and easy to use.
What then?
Once you have completed your training, the Avis Academy is still an invaluable tool. You can dip back into the training at any time you choose, for a refresher or to keep up to speed with any changes.
