Avis car rental endangers lives
We picked up our rental car from Avis Johannesburg at OR Tambo International - we used to use Hertz for car rentals until they stopped offering free parking at Cape Town International...now we go with whatever's cheapest. Avis arranged for a booster seat, which is suitable for 5 year olds, however we had asked for a baby seat (suitable for newborns), and had to wait around while they organised a baby seat (had to be driven in from their dispatch which is 5 kilometres away...and said driver works on African time).

Newborn babies cannot support their necks, their neck muscles simply aren't developed enough - this is the very reason why so many people have to "learn" how to hold babies in a manner in which their necks are supported. It is also the reason why newborn babies have baby car seats which face backwards, so that in the event of an accident the baby falls into the seat, without straining their neck muscles. When the Avis fella installed their baby-seat into the car, I immediately noticed that the seat faced forwards. I complained that they had given us the wrong car-seat; what I didn't realise at the time was that there was nothing wrong with the car-seat, but that the Avis employee had installed the seat incorrectly. We drove off from Avis with the seat installed incorrectly (and hence our little one being especially vulnerable to an accident), it was only on the way to our destination and after studying the instructions, that I realised that Avis had installed the seat incorrectly. This incompetence endangers babies' lives.
Side comment : GPS rental
Avis rent out Garmin GPS units at their car rental branch at OR Tambo International...but this was not doing a roaring trade, in fact the lady stationing the Garmin desk looked like she was falling asleep, during my time spent waiting for Avis car rental's " baby-seat", she did not have a single person even approach her.
