Avis Johannesburg car rental

We arrived at Johannesburg O.R. Tambo on 24 April 2011 (Easter Day) without a reservation for a car rental (we were planning on using the Gautrain, until we remembered that you cant take the trolleys onto it, and we had tons of luggage). So, we decided to give Avis Johannesburg a try, and it was mostly a rather pleasant experience.

Avis car rental in JohannesburgIt being Easter Sunday, there was hardly anybody there (presumably most people travel home on Easter Monday, at the end of the long weekend). We first asked them for the cheapest car, and they said we could get a Kia Picanto Class A vehicle for R225, which was as good as your typical Avis special, but sounded reasonable. After a bit of investigation it turned out that there weren't any Class A vehicles available, so they offered a Class M Chevrolet for R250 (for some reason Class M is the second cheapest rather than what logic would dictate, that it would be a Class B). One area I'd like to see improvement is the turnaround time, it does seem to take a lot longer than it should to process a client and get them on the way to their destination. Although, our 4-year-old seemed to enjoy the wait - she lay down in the lounge area, then played with the bunny that was lying there, and was delighted when one of the Avis attendees gave her a balloon - well done Avis!

Less happily, when we got to the Chev we discovered that our suitcase didn't fit into the boot - perhaps something to work into the communication process is to warn those of us customers who've never driven a Chev about its small boot space. So we went back to Avis and this time got a Class B Renault Logan with plenty of boot space - happiness :) In contrast to our Toyota Corolla at home, the Renault Logan feels light on the road, and it's nice that the seat's high up, and it has sharp brakes.

Avis Johannesburg is split into a preferred service queue and another queue for us commoners - while we were waiting in the commoners queue, a mildly upset preferred service customer came to request service - there was nobody assisting in the preferred service area.

Our previous review of Avis Johannesburg was all the way back on the 21st June 2007.
