21 June 2007. In a previous article, we wrote about the ineptitude of Avis car rental at Johannesburg International, in that they don't know how to put in place baby seats, thereby endangering the lives of babies. Today, we again reviewed South Africa's car rental giant, putting Avis at Johannesburg Airport to the test (fortuanately for them, it didn't involve a car seat this time!).
After my flight from Cape Town to Johannesburg, I absolutely blitzed through Avis. What a pleasure - no queues at Johannesburg Airport's Avis (ok, I cheated a bit as I'm allowed to go through Avis's back section for regulars...but it still felt good, and there weren't queues in the regular section either).
Avis issued me with a Nissan Tiida - they asked me whether I was ok with it - and to tell the truth, I'd never driven a Nissan Tiida before. The Tiida has a flat straight dashboard. The car went great, but I wont hire it again as hatchbacks are less secure (in South Africa you need a sealed boot for your goods to be safe). I also prefer car radio systems which have controls on the steering wheel.

As far as South African accommodation options go, the Holiday Inn isn't bad; but I'm not a fan of the Sandton one - especially crappy that it has no hotspot in the bedrooms - however, I have discovered a trick - in certain rooms the hotspot works!!! (tip - book in room 227 at Holiday Inn on the corner of Katherine & Rivonia Streets).
