SA Roadlink appoints forensic experts to probe cause of crash
17 December 2008
SA Roadlink expresses its deepest condolences to the families of those who died in Monday night's accident near Hibberdene, and has hired a team of independent forensic experts to investigate the cause of the crash.
Says Roadlink risk manager Herman Steyn: "We regret the losses, and we're doing everything possible to assist the families of the deceased. We have appointed external forensic experts to investigate the cause the accident. There were three vehicles involved, and the cause of the accident has not yet been established."
The Roadlink coach was on its way from Kokstad to Durban when the accident happened. SA Roadlink reiterates that safety remains a high priority, especially during the busy holiday period. "SA Roadlink has introduced a number of safety measures to ensure the safe travel of our passengers, including ensuring that our vehicles are roadworthy. For example, our entire fleet underwent voluntary roadworthy tests at government testing stations in preparation for the peak holiday season," says Steyn.
Other safety measures include:
It has bought six new vehicles, which will be put on the road for the festive season;
It has bought one of the best structured depots in City Deep with state-of-the-art workshops to do maintenance checks. Before any trip is undertaken, all buses undergo preventative maintenance checks and brake testing.
Steyn says it's business as usual on the Durban routes, despite statements from the KwaZulu-Natal transport MEC Bheki Cele that SA Roadlink's permits in the province will be revoked from midnight on Friday, December 19. "
There has been no direct communication with the company with regard to the licences on the Durban route," says Steyn. "We want to assure the public it's business usual. Our legal team is trying to make contact with the MEC's office on this issue."
