Airline Jobs in South Africa

So you want to become a cabin crew member/hostie/trolley dolley? Or perhaps you want to sit in the cockpit?

"The criteria for a flying job follows a general pattern. They want to weed out the no-hopers, the dulls, the stressers and the drips. They want the good-looking (that's important), the approachable, the physically perfect, the capable and those with just a smattering of fun about them, but not too much, as they may be difficult to control in the long run." extract from the book "You F'Coffee Sir".

Life as a international flight attendant

Lots of time spent in foreign hotels with fellow hosties (usually young & attractive) and pilots that you spend large amounts of time drinking with...not a bad way to spend your 20s :) Regularly crossing time zones and never really adjusting. People tend to spend less than ten years in the industry before moving on, not just because of the lifestyle, but also because there's limited growth (like they say, the "sky's the limit!"

Networking

When all else fails do a bit of networking. Find an airline conference, mingle with people who work for the airliners, and see if they're interested. They'll be impressed by your initiative.

Worst jobs in travel

These aren't strictly airline jobs, but we thought we'd publish it anyway - the Telegraph's worst travel-related jobs (if you're doing any of them, you have our complete respect):

  • cabin crew member on a Friday night flight to Ibiza

  • toilet cleaner on an Indian train

  • room cleaner at a Japanese love hotel (don't ask)

  • cruise ship mortician, to look after those whose voyage is their last

  • lifeguard on Jeorse Park Beach in the US with its polluted water

  • polar bear trainer in a Moscow circus

  • window cleaner at the JW Marriott Marquis Dubai, the world's tallest hotel

  • tourism head in the Democratic Republic of the Congo

  • rail ticket inspector (anywhere!)

Testimonials - "You were at least R100 cheaper than ANY other airline’s own site! In one case you were R800 cheaper than an airline’s own site!" Bjarne Henriksen
