Here's a blast from the past - Bill Humphreys got a month's ban for attending a Cape Winelands cycling event in 1975 apartheid South Africa. On the invitation of the South African Cycling Federation, Bill took a coach from San Diego to New York, before flying from JFK to Johannesburg to Cape Town - "We began to realize how efficient the race organizers were when we arrived in South Africa, (which for me had taken 48 hours from San Diego). Our flight from Rome was late on arrival at Johannesburg so they held up the connecting flight to Capetown (sic)". The highlight for Bill was receiving the “Most Aggressive Rider” award on day one.
