This was meant to be a post about Durban to Cape Town World Cup flights, but then I heard the rumours about a Mango Airlines happy hour on Tuesday.  I'm afraid I don't know more than that at this stage, not even the times (historically they've been from 13h00 until 14h00, or from 12h00 until 14h00).  You'll want to book your flights at the Mango website, cross check with the price comparison tool

I thought there would be a few funnies when we surveyed flight prices during the Fifa World Cup. And here we have British Airways cheapest from Durban to Cape Town on the 11th June. Not a particularly expensive price (R803), as it wouldn't make it in time for the Uruguay v France match at Cape Town Stadium on the 11th.

The miracle that is Ruben van Assouw

Amongst all the tragedy of the Afriqiyah Airlines Flight 711 crash, there appeared a miracle - 9-year-old Ruben van Assouw is the sole survivor (his Mom, Dad and brother, on the same flight, were not as lucky). Ruben, from the Netherlands, was found, still strapped to his seat, with scrapes, bruises and shattered legs.

The Assouw family had been touring southern Africa, with blog entries giving us some insights. Their route covered God's window, the Kruger Park, Swaziland and St Lucia.

Assouws at the Mac Mac falls

Here's a rough translation of one of their blog entries: "Pap van de Sande has brought us to Brussels airport. Everything went well, move well in Libya, Tripoli, at 05.00 hours we land at the airport in South Africa. The last piece in the plane, Ruben got sick and had to spuggen. At the airport was a gentleman with a sign "of Besouw 'wait. That's us!
Car was already at the airport, instructions and still got a thing drawn and nice hop on to the campsite. Yeah right, get in, drive on the left ... .. we are still settled on the wrong side of the road. Ruben is also the car volgespugd ... ... And if you want to give direction to go once the wipers going. Is again getting used to. It is bad weather here, raining and very cloudy, it is very fresh, we'll see.
By noon we were two hours at the campsite. Nice and quiet, lots of sheep, an ostrich. Afternoon around keep the Poacher Pubben and grill where we have dinner on Tuesday evening for the price of 305 rand. And nice back to the campsite to sleep. At 6 hours was already dark and it starts to cool down tremendously. Arrived at the campsite, our place is taken by Ruben tad escort? Sheep and our shepherd, she also removed. So between the sheep droppings we plant the car, fold up tent and sleep away. Tired of the outward journey.
Wednesday, April 28
At 7:30 we were awakened z'on bit. Nice breakfast, then back around the clock ten hours on the road. On our way Sabi gemakkie good driving. Along some shopping done at the spruce and eaten at Wimpie. Drove here and there and just got out of the view. Sabi afternoon at a campsite looked because it was still early we went to look at the mac mac coil. The water was cold but we were tough guys do get wet and have to put. nice guys can splash in the heated swimming pool when we were back at the campsite. Evening in time to create our braai meat and barbecue, because the six hours it starts getting dark is pretty cool.
Thursday, April 29
At ten o'clock the camp grounds off the panoramic route for part to do. We have done: mac mav waterfalls, where I bought the first elephant carved from natural wood and blackened with shoe polish for the price of 500 instead of 800 rim edge. Then we went to Pilgrims rest. An old mining town still remained completely intact, except the men who wash the cars without being asked for the price to 500 rand, we have 200 data edge. Lots of stalls selling souvenirs here. Here we have purchased the Big 5 in stone for the price of 250 rand. Hereafter by God's wonderful window overlooking the valley. From here through the potholes. Pretty worn rocks. Again many stalls with merchandise and many monkeys swarming. Now looking for a campsite. Found with beautiful swimming pool which was very cold. Very early dinner, hamburgers with bread, not very nice but it fills. It will be a short evening, it's now 7:30 and we were exhausted. Good night.

Friday, April 30
After we have really enjoyed the monkeys on the site for 11 hours, we again set off. We first take a look at the three rondavels. Very nice view, despite the clouds. Even better than we found god window. From here we drove to Phanoble this is a village just before the Kruger Park. Along the way we have a lot termietheuvels seen monkeys on the road, cows and goats on the street. The campsite is within walking distance from the gate of the park. We have the rest of the afternoon stayed nice and relaxing here. Swimming pool with cold water again. Tomorrow the park.
Saturday, May 1
Today we are at 10 hours in the park. First we went to the spar went to get some groceries. We have registered at the beginning of the park. Most exciting here just to drive around with the idea of all uncaged beasts will encounter. We encounter many impalas our nickname deer. Enzo took his second was the elephant ... .., further seen buffalo, wildebeest, fox, zebra, more deer, ostrich, many birds, turtle, giraffe, monkeys, wild boar, deer ... many more .... For five hours we were back at the next campsite in Letabe.
Sunday, May 2
So we're on time today. Everyone woke up at 06:00 hours. Many birds do their best to get everyone up ... and those who depart on time. "Many animals seen today. It was exciting that two rhinos crossed that went pretty fast, and looked at us and not really quite sure which way they were. By 6 hours we were on site in Lower Sabi.
Monday, May 3
Today at quarter to five we woke up by all the people who were busy working again. On 6 hours but we also went to visit the observatory on the site to go for animal spotting. Unfortunately not seen or heard hippos, so they sit somewhere between the grass or something. After dinner we went away and at half past ten, after having seen many animals, we were at Crocodile Bridge. Here we decided that we are not bottom of the park but the park to ride. On the way to a lookout point with a ranger was out. Krocodil seen mural and he told them he been here 20 years working on these rocks, there are few animals because they have enough to drink in the pools in the forest, he was on his bike or with gun ... From here we go to barbeton. On the way we had a huge downpour with thunder. In Barbeton arrived at the campsite but we decided to rent a cottage instead of a wet campsite without shelter or something to stand. Now the weather is dry but just relax and take a bath, so immediately the braai and comfortable in a real bed instead of on a wooden plank is sometimes good.
Tuesday, May 4
Today we cross the border into Swaziland. Through the mountains which was very nice, we arrived after an hour or so to the border of South Africa. Here we had to write again. Car was checked, and we could have passports checked. After several mile, we arrived at the border of Swaziland and yes, the same ritual. Chek passports, car as open for inspection and we can again. We are immediately in another country, the roads are different, not maintained, the houses are different, the scenery is beautiful. What we notice is that all humans really very friendly and you go rich or poor they all look very neat. No bad poor people here. Along the way some kids happier with a Marie biscuit. Around 3 o'clock we were at the nature reserve ... ..where the site gets up. This is also a park with various animals, here's our trouwns Prince Bernard was. We have just drove through the park but it can not match kruger and we have only wild boar, buffalo and impalas seen. From 4:30 to bet that site we would not have thought. Car put down and the men still have swum and then expand the tents. We have eaten at the restaurant. 400 rand for eating and drinking here, it was not spectacular but good. Now take some rest by the campfire and sleep so.
Wednesday, May 5
It is now 9:30 and we go out again. First a car with jumper cables to try camping at the track. But unfortunately it does not work. Well then we just pick up the car but see if that works. But then the men have the boss's go ... .. pushing the hill, piece of paper, wondering ... ... .. and yes he does. So now we go, today is a good deed done dad. We actually just drove today, got off alone again nowhere near the border of Swaziland. However we came by car over a small creek where some children were playing and splashing. These kids we have the rest of our Marie biscuits provided. We were expecting that members would have to share with the rest but he squeaked quick break with cookies and all .... At the border we had our passports stamped again to go out. Just before we crossed the border we had bought for 100 rand four statuettes (three elephants and a rhinoceros) of two children. They knew not what it should cost but what they said. In retrospect we had tocheen weird feeling. We thought it took itself pretty cheap in comparison to the rest we had seen and the kids would soon get mss thunder of their dad or ma ... .. Anyway. At the border of South Africa out of the car to the passports stamped and we can hop on to our next destination. You notice immediately that south africa surely richer than swasi country. The roads are better, houses krotjes instead, it falls immediately. Now we are on a camping lodge in Hluhluwe bush baby. This campground with cottages is run by Pim and Thandie. They started here 3 years ago from Breda. Pim is Dutch and Thandie originates here Sun, 1940 km further away. Patrick had spotted him on the internet. The children enjoy swimming here. We moneteel with another set-the only guests here so nice and quiet.
Thursday, May 6
Today we drive to St Lucia to the sea. We have some of Pim leave taken and also inquired about how and what the Sani Pass. By 0:30 we were on the beach. Almost nobody in sight. At most 4 or 5 people. Later there were many boys and girls swimming in a school. Some girls have worked with Enzo and Ruben still sitting on the beach and have our guys a little pumped.Where are you from, what are you, your friends will be, what's your school, etc ... ... later we have a nice picture of them all has been imitating us Enzo address is given. I wonder if we will hear something. Later we drove to the campsite in St Lucy. Good site, nothing special but everything is there. Sávondes we entered the village to enjoy something to eat. Was good. A Reuben Pizza, Papa Enzo and ribs and I shot a fish ear all regional drink price of 450 rand. At half past eight back, kids to bed because they are tired, and we again not much later.
Friday, May 7
Today we have a rest day inserted. We stay here to enjoy the beach. Unfortunately, today very windy so we were sandblasted on the beach. We have still an hour or two to keep full and then returned. First some of the spruce shopping, then at Wimpie something to eat and walked back to the campsite. Just before the camp we saw hippos in the water nearby and took a look and there was also a vendor with a statue of a pig. Yeah, what does it cost? 60 edge ... ... ... is he, Well for 50 edge I take him. Ok deal. So now we have a boar pig at home. Carved and stained with engine oil and I also hear and smell. We are here to walk back to the hippos and dad and we went to Ruben walked the beach while Enzo and I went back. Gebraaid nice big steak with baked potatoes.
Saturday, May 8
Today a very long day in the car. Today we drive to a campsite near the Sani Pass. End of the day arrived at the bear camp. Camping pitch on a kind of farm. Yet here in the on lkekker sit campfire stomach gosh what is it cold in here when the sun is wegf. Toijd nice to sleep then.Patrick has not chatted with a neighbor for one year with a car at the tondtrekken in south africa.
Sunday, May 9
Today we drive to the Sani pass Lesotoh. What a great picture, between the rocks, wobbly paths, no wonder that only 4x4 vehicles can result. Very impressive I must say. Arrived over, we have two hours of effort, we have nice coffee and toast at the highest pub in Africa. It was very cold but mostly very guestbeds wind was blowing you off your clothes. We are in a panoramic Lesotoh vieuw gone where I do not think many people who come because the path was not found very passable. Little rutting, so an enormous challenge but at the top the view was great.Beautiful Mother's gift. Well back to the border we got a flat tire on the road. Half the car to unload the stuff to find but we did it. Return to the border stamped passports. We have a vankantie never had so many stamps, and we could again. Now it's quarter past four and went back to the same camp as we left this morning."
