A sense of normality has been restored on the Johannesburg - Cape Town flight route, Mango Airlines is cheapest and British Airways is back to being more expensive (last time British Airways was cheapest). For those of you who enjoy ultra-luxury travel, the bad news is that we're moving into high season and the Blue Train is charging R11,370.

Sean Brown from Camden (New Jersey) found his heart in Africa. He made his first trip out of the USA, travelling to Cape Town & Johannesburg with 74 students. Many South Africans addressed him in the vernacular at first, and spoke about Obama when he told them he was from America. Sean shares so much:
"My mind could not escape the thought of the deplorable conditions that the hundreds of thousands of people that lived in what they call townships, but we would call slums or shacks."
"Living in Camden, a city known for its violence and poverty, the bad experiences can stretch from annoying to dangerous. I will never look at my home the same again. In South Africa, including Johannesburg, 1 out of 3 women are raped and never report it."
"Traveling on the bus, watching young girls walk home from school with their dusty school uniforms, I could not help but wonder how long it would be before those young ladies had their innocence snatched from them."
"I asked a friend that I met in Cape Town about public transportation. Trains? “That’s what you get on if you want to get shot,” he remarked matter-of-factly."
"Once you have learned to fly your plane, it is far less fatiguing to fly than to drive a car. You don't have to watch every second for cats, dogs, children, lights, road signs, ladies with baby carriages, and citizens who drive out in the middle of the block against the lights...Nobody who has not been up in the sky on a glorius morning can possibly imagine the way a pilot feels in free heaven." William T Piper, President of Piper Aircraft Corporation.
