fly JNB - DUR for R398 |
19 Dec 2008 flights |
Interlink Airline take a bow - in the middle of the December holiday season Interlink are offering flights from Johannesburg to Durban for R398 (one-way). That is R251 cheaper than the next cheapest flight - Mango Flex costing R649. The price of R398 is only R4 higher than the cheapest flight price we have ever recorded on the JNB - DUR route (R394 by Mango Airlines on 15 March 2008).

The above prices are the cheapest we could find for flights from Johannesburg to Durban on the 19th Dec 2008, departing between 1729 and 2036. It is possible that cheaper tickets can be found for different routes, dates and times (as was pointed out to us by one of our readers last week).
Last week we broke the news that often Mango Flexi is sometimes cheaper than Mango economy class. Today that proved to be the case again. Mango Flex was going for R649 and Mango economy class for R808. Interesting to note that for some flight times Mango Plus is even cheaper than Mango's normal price!

Here's where you can book Mango Flex and Mango Plus airline tickets.
Unfortuanately it's not all good news and low prices today - 1time (R1087), Kulula (R869), BA business class (R2319) and SAA business class (R1897) all recorded their highest prices ever on the JNB - DUR flight route. It is surprising that 1time are charging such high prices, given that they were one of the only airlines not to hedge their fuel prices at the older higher costs (remember $147 oil). One Time Airline's previous high was in the 19th Jul 2008 survey (R928).
The very cheapest way of getting from Johannesburg to Durban (other than walking) is with a Shosholoza Meyl economy class train (R140 for a one-way ticket). All bus and train tickets have gone up, with some hitting record highs.
Baz Bus's site is downFor the first time in our surveys, the Baz Bus website was not working.
Karen is a student at Washington College, attracted to South Africa by her desire to work with AIDS patients and their families. Her and two girlfriends hired a car (during exam study week!) and drove from Grahamstown to Cintsa (on the southern end of the Wild Coast) via East London. She tells us:
about their experience driving during an electricity load shedding - every man for himself and God for us all!
how they met a kewl guy, who had hitchiked from Portugal to Senegal, then flown from Senegal to Joburg, and subsequently broke his leg at Coffee Bay (nothing like a man in crutches to bring out a ladies mothering nature)
how they got to play with baby lions, a giraffe(see photo) and pet a scary Cheetah
