That new kid on the block, Interlink Airlines, continues to outcompete the more established airlines - this week with a price of R548 from Johannesburg to Durban. For the first time we've added the Shosholoza Meyl train to our survey, and it costs R140 to take this train from Johannesburg's Park Station to Durban.

Very high flight prices
Whilst Interlink Airlines was the cheapest, British Airways has the dubious honour of offering the highest flight price we have recorded for a one-way economy class ticket from Johannesburg to Durban (R1357). The R928 for 1time airline is also the highest it has offered on this route.

Interlink Airlines is also offering the cheapest business class flight from Johannesburg to Durban (R1298).

Bus trips
It's old news now that the Baz Bus increased its prices for a 7-day pass from R1020 to R1200 on 1 July. For the first time since the 26 April 2008 survey, SA Roadlink are offering the cheapest bus trip from Johannesburg to Durban (R135), however for the extra R5 I'd rather have the additional safety of the Shosholoza Meyl train. Translux and City to City are fully booked.

Record low car rental price
First Car Rental have set a record low car rental price in any survey we have carried out at any location in South Africa this year. First Car Rental's R324 for the weekend starting the 15th August beats the previous record of R326 by Tempest Car Hire.
Best hotel prices in Durban
In our survey of hotel prices in Durban, Road Lodge was cheapest as usual (althought its price has gone up, in line with the rest of the City Lodge Group). The Suncoast Hotel & Towers set a record for all the wrong reasons - the highest price in Durban this year.

Gara Lamarche survives South Africa
Considering that the previous time she visited South Africa she was robbed at gunpoint, Gara Lamarche is pretty brave to come back for more. After arriving in South Africa, she flew from Johannesburg to Richards Bay and then to the Hluhluwe Game Reserve - clearly the going was fairly slow in parts.

JETLAG
I bought the book "JETLAG" about SAA in the Coleman Andrews era - I'll share the more interesting quotes from it:

Ryanair reduces flights
Ryanair has decided to reduce its winter flights from Stansted, by grounding 8 aircraft. It blames BAA Stansted for refusing to work together with it to reduce airport charges for those 8 aircraft - "Like most monopolies, the BAA dismissed Ryanair’s reasonable requests out of hand".
