SAA Flight

6 Aug 2013 : Rating 2/5. I love to travel; it's one of my greatest passions. Another one of my passions is to travel to Zambia to fish along the Zambezi River. So imagine my frustration when there is only one airline carrier that flies directly from Johannesburg to Lusaka. What is my frustration with this you may ask? Plain and simple – poor service! I've emailed SAA's customer service to complain about their service not once, but three times! And for some unknown reason, they never reply. Here are some snippets from the email I've sent them three times: "On the 15th of June I received the worst service from the SAA staff at OR Tambo! It was one of the busiest days I've seen at the airport and there were only 2 people working at the African departures counter (B26-B38). We stood in a queue for over 2 hours and barely made it to our flight even though we had arrived with enough time to spare. While standing in the ever growing queue to check in, the SAA staff allowed other people to push in for their flights, yet many other flights such as ours, which were closing weren't given special treatment. My father's bag was 2kgs overweight yet mine was only 14kgs but we did not have time to repack the bag as we had them wrapped and our flight was closing. I then spoke to the "team leader" Mpho at counter B15 who was extremely rude to me and offered no help whatsoever! When we finally made it to our flight (SA062) which was due to depart at 10:30, the food was only brought on at 10:52, which resulted in us only taking off at 11:13! Then upon returning to Johannesburg from Lusaka (flight SA063), our seats had been overbooked! We had to stand and wait in the kitchen area while they tried to sort it out and instead of moving us to business class, the staff at SAA moved the two people who had been comfortably sitting in our seats while we stood waiting, to business class! My Dad is a voyager member and certainly did not expect to be treated so badly." That was my 6th flight with SAA this year and each time it has been a terrible experience with dreadful service and arrogant attitudes. I try not to complain but sometimes enough is enough! I fly to Zambia again this week – everyone hold thumbs that it will actually be a pleasant experience with SAA this time.

Short flight from Johannesburg

"The flight from Johannesburg to Lusaka was a short one—1.5 hours later, I was in Lusaka, the capital city of Zambia. The land was a mix of green and yellow, a typical scene of African...Currency exchange is another deep learning curve I have to go through. With 1 USD to 5000 Zambian kwacha, I handled my very first million kwacha transaction today-all in cash! The hostel I stayed overnight in lusaka is called “chachacha backpackers” . The 6 bulk-bed lodge I stayed in looks exactly like Washington’s winter camp in Valley forge national park, except with mosquito nets."
