You're not spoiled for choices, as only SA Express (SAX) operates direct flights from Johannesburg to Richards Bay. Be flexible with your travel dates to help ensure a cheaper airfare. Johannesburg flights are from O.R. Tambo International Airport - there are no flights from Lanseria Airport to Richards Bay.
Alternatively, you could fly from Johannesburg to Durban and then drive from Durban to Richards Bay (it's about an hour and a half drive from King Shaka International Airport, or 144km).
A direct flight from Johannesburg to Richards Bay Airport (RCB) should take some 90 minutes. The driving distance between Johannesburg and Richards Bay is some 600km.

Car hire
Other than Thrifty Car Rental, most of the major car hire outfits have offices at Richards Bay Airport - see our Richards Bay car rental page for details.
When I cruised past Richards Bay on the MSC Sinfonia, I was astounded at the number of ships we joined - Richards Bay has the largest purpose built port for the export of coal. However, to experience Richards Bay one should look past the industry at the game reserves and beautiful beaches. The popular Tuzi Gazi Waterfront derives its name from the 2 rivers flowing into the harbour, the Mzingazi and Umhlathuze. If you enjoy hiking and bird watching, pop by the Enseleni Nature Reserve. If you enjoy the ocean, book a dolphin viewing charter.
