"In the long run, it is hoped that Firefly expands further and contributes to the development and growth of the Indonesia, Malaysia and Thailand growth triangle (IMT-GT)", Malaysian Transport Minister Datuk Seri Chan Kong Choy (15 March 2007). |
Idris Jala, Malaysia Airlines' managing director, speaking at a business briefing and launch of the new airline’s logo on the 16th March 2007, said Firefly Airlines would also work with the national carrier in breaking new ground and realising a core network over the next five years. The core network would include markets like North America, South America and South Africa.
In a highly unusual move, Fly Asian Xpress (FAX) offered to hand over its rural routes to Firefly Airlines. FAX director Datuk Tony Fernandes disclosed the offer to the public on the 11th April 2007. Minister Datuk Seri Chan Kong Choy said the Transport Ministry had asked for the offer to be put in writing and emphasised that irrespective of who operated the rural service, the Malaysian Government would continue to provide subsidy for the flights. “That is our commitment that we have made to the rural folk in Sabah and Sarawak,” said the Minister.

Firefly Airlines started accepting bookings from Monday the 19th March 2007. Tickets can be purchased from its 24-hour call centre, 03-7845 4543 or at MAS ticketing offices. The travelling period is from the 2nd April 2007 to the 30th April 2007, and are subject to the following:

Initially there were wonders about where Firefly Airlines website would be. The website is NOT www.firefly.com.my, www.flyfirefly.com.my, www.flyfirefly.com or www.firefly.com (www.firefly.com.my is under construction, www.flyfirefly.com.my is an empty web-page, www.flyfirefly.com is also a site under construction whilst www.firefly.com is a mobile phone site). Innovatively, Firefly Airlines chose www.fireflyz.com.my as their website (not www.fireflyz.com or www.fireflys.com or www.fireflys.com.my). Tickets will be available from their website from mid-May 2007.
Given that most airline tickets are sold online, Firefly Airlines have been criticised for the fact that they chose a brandname for which they don't own the url to (firefly.com is owned by no less than Microsoft and firefly.com.my was taken). The url fireflyz.com.my has also been criticised as the use of a "z" instead of an "s" on the internet, is often understood to mean an underground service is being offered.
Two Fokker F50 turboprop powered aircraft (owned by Malaysia Airline's parent company Penerbangan Malaysia Bhd.). The Fokker 50 can carry around 50 passengers over a range of 2000 km at a speed of some 500 km/h. The aircraft were chosen for economic reasons. Malaysia Airlines have flown Fokker F50s in the past, for example in rural areas in Sarawak. The plane is typically manned by 4 crew members - 2 cabin crew and 2 pilots. Firefly Airline's cabin staff wear brown trousers and black t-shirts with the Firefly logo. The seats in the Fokker F50 are divided into 2 sides, with 2 seats on each side and an aisle down the centre. There is one toilet on board at the front left of the aircraft.
There have been some concerns about the Fokker F50's safety. When looking at the history of accidents of these planes, it should be borne in mind that turboprop planes (like the Fokker F50) tend to be operated in more marginal environments (for example, smaller airfields, perhaps with less advanced navigational aids). Turboprops tend, historically, to be operated by smaller, less financially secure and technically advanced airlines, where the management has a less developed culture of safety. There is sometimes less stringent safety or regulatory oversight governing such operations. Flight crews tend to be less experienced (as they get older, they move onto jet equipment). These circumstances may lead to the impression that turboprops are more dangerous. But one needs to keep in mind the operating environments where they tend to be found.

Something to be aware of when flying on a turboprop is that you feel turbulence in much higher levels than on a jet, but this is only because of the lower speeds at which a turboprop flies.
Malaysian Airlines (which own Firefly Airlines) had flown 1.8 million flights by the end of 2004, and 2 of those flights had fatal accidents. One of those fatal accidents was a hijacked B737 in 1977 (MH653), and the other was a Fokker F50 in 1995 (MG2133).
There has been some speculation that the reason for Firefly Airlines starting was that MAS was trying to find some way to use its Fokker F50s, which had been up for sale as recently as 23 January 2007 (9M-MGK sn:20248) by Penerbangan Malaysia (owner of all MAS aircraft).
SAS Norge (full name SAS Scandanavian Airlines Norge) has 6 Fokker F50s in its fleets.
Firefly Airline's inaugural flight was from Subang Sultan Abdul Aziz Shah airport to Penang International Airport, on the 2nd April 2007. Firefly Airline's first commercial flight was from Malaysia's northern Penang state to Kota Bahru, the capital of the northern Kelantan state; on tuesday the 3rd April 2007.
Firefly airlines will be operated by Malaysia Airlines' wholly owned subsidiary, FlyFirefly Sdn. Bhd., which was formerly known as Kelas Services Sdn. Bhd.

The Department of Civil Aviation Malaysia issued the Air Services License and Air Operator's Certificate to Firefly effective from 17 March 2007. Firefly Airline's base is at Penang International Airport (also known as Bayan Lepas International Airport, PEN). Penang is a northern state of Malaysia. The airport is located 16km (10 miles) south of Georgetown, the capital city of Penang. The aero bridge at Penang International Airport cannot be used for the Fokker 50 as the plane is smaller (so one has to walk along the ground).
Firefly Airline's Chief Executive Officer and managing director is is Eddy Leong, and their Chief Financial Officer is Mohd Sukri Husin.

Dumdum | Cheap flights? What cheap flights? I paid RM959.94 two days ago for 4 persons including an infant to travel to Langkawi and back on Firefly. What has however made me really, really annoyed today is that I checked the fares for my brother and discovered that the fares for the flights that I've booked have suddenly gone down. I thought budget airlines always sold their cheaper seats first but that doesn't seem to be the case with Firefly. I would have saved RM420, yes RM420, if I had made the bookings today and the flight is only in 9 days time so it's not like it's last minute sales. |

admin_manjung@medise | Since Airasia discontinue flight to or from Ipoh,y dont u guys take over,it's funny our Indon neighbour there got the route between Ipoh to next door, but there is no domestic flight from Ipoh to Penang nor KL |
Mek Kelantan | At last we have a flight from Penang to Kota Bharu after so many years MAS has stopped her service. Thank you Firefly, you have made our dream come true. But the departure time from PEN-K.B is not very good, too early or late evening(traffice jam to airport). I suggested that one flight per day at 10.00 a.m. There are not so many passages,or else no profit for your company. Then you will stop flying to K.B. Pity us. |
gg | I think, give Fax more time to operate RAS, firefly just born and need more time, even mas is his parent company but what about all his staff who just join fax last 8 months about 250 staff in sabah n sarawak, will firefly taking all his staff? firefly have mas staff to run the show. How many of Fax staff willing to join AirAsiaX base in KL? |
my name | y wan to take over...c abs2 |
concern lady..... | Welcome home Firefly...glad that govt decide u guys to take over RAS routes..cant waitlah... |
michelle | well done MAS in connecting east with west, hopefully it helps the economy and the tourist board. Will we expect less traffic jam at North South Hwy during festive? Everyone is concerning on the safety of the Fokker F50, I am sure Fireflyz is paying extra attention to it. Fly Fireflyz!!! |
darus | Congratulations Firefly! It is timely that Penang is served by a dedicated airline, as she has long been sidelined by KL's Sepang. Good for Penang, she can expect more visitors. Good for regional travel too. I believe Firefly fills a niche not currently provided by any of the other M'sian carriers. As for safety, M'sia Airlines (the parent company) is one of the safest carriers in Asia (pls see http://www.airsafe.com/events/regions/asia.htm). It has a higher safety rate than Singapore Airlines, which has had 2 fatal crashes in 1997 (involving its wholly owned subsudiary SilkAir) and 2000 (a Singapore Airlines 747-400 at Taipei). While both have had 2 crashes, M'sia Airlines has flown 1.8 million flights, S'pore Airlines only 1.0 million. And, I may add, one of the 2 M'sia Airlines crashes was a result of the pilot being fatally shot by a hijacker. |
nia roberts | i was on that flight to katu bharu. the party they had was great! we were on the front page of a paper!get on some pictures |

concern lady.. | Read todays paper 12Apr...FAX giving up East Msia operations to Firefly???? What say u Cheap Flights? |
Leevaxx | (saya kurang fasih speaking,so cakap melayu la...) kenapa tiket free xade kt kaunter MAS..kene call hotline firefly.tu pun nk kene pakai credit card..aku mane ade credit card...... |
Shaf | I'm checking the flight schedules... 15 mins turnaround time? My goodness... is that possible? |
Simheswara dasa | I flew firefly today from Kuantan to Penang. It was exciting and I like it very much. Malaysian Airlines should venture into more fiery routes in malaysia for firefly to sustain. I am all fired up about flying firefly. |
jm | Dont worry about service at firefly, cos his c/crew are all crew from MAS before which operate in swk & sabah, they are not new in this fleets. |
atikah | mmm..my hubby was very happy with this new flight to penang.i can go to penang every week without travel so far as i live in k.bharu..thank u for the service..fokker just like pelangi air..huhu.. |
A. Syadiq | hope firefly will be able to provide better customer service than airasia - its sole competitor in malaysia.not satisfied with the attitude of some of the cabin crews of airasia... |
Chef f.n.d | at last we western part of malaysia can go to the east cost fast and more frequent..thnx MAS |
Hafiz MZ | Thx for commenting n posting this link in my blog. I found lots of info here bout firefly. Kudos! Very informative |
jimmy | hope firefly will come to sarawak & sabah in 2-3yrs time.shoud not be any problem on ground handling as mas staff is all around and can take over in just one night. By doing so MAS can fly for international sector only firefly will provide all the conection and firefly can divide his service into two class gccl and on eycl no makan punya, this will give more ummm to AK. |
Ladylike | For all married woman out there watch out if your hubby taking a Firefly ticket. If they say they want to go to USM PEN (understood Univ Science M'sia Penang), then it should be OK, but if they say they want to go to PEN USM (Penang-Koh Sah Mui), better tail them. |
linnani | well done |
armchairbitch | Congratulations Firefly! It is timely that Penang is served by a dedicated airline, as she has long been sidelined by KL's Sepang. Good for Penang, she can expect more visitors. Nevets | lets see, since malaysia has 6 airlines now, and i would think that all the airlines have different quality and services which each has it's own good, but won't it be better if MAS as the main air lines should concentrate more on itself. ? hopefully it doesn't become like the LRT sys that malaysia is having, it's troublesome for consumer to choose which airlines to fly, or might even take hours just to compare the flying dates, fares, and availibility on the flight. P:S : if someone could develop a website that links all airlines search togather within a click, guess that the webmaster will be earning much for such situation, give it a think... IT Savvy's :) |
zalira | horey now i can fly from penang to langkawi.. tak perlu "mabuk laut" naik feri lagi...hehehe |
Cheap flights | Hi Wayne. Contact Firefly Airline at 03-7845 4543 to check out the opportunities to become an flight steward. Alternatively find contact details at www.fireflyz.com.my (not www.firefly.com.my or www.fireflys.com.my or www.flyfirefly.com.my). Good luck! |
Wayne | Can i be a flight Steward in FlyFireFly Airline???how to be??? |
slumber | its good to have another cheap air fares airlines in Malaysia so that there will be a competition among the airliners.. Anyway.. Airasia is not that cheap.. yeahh.. its maybe RM90.00 but one have to add around RM100 for airport duty.. fuel..ding dong ding dong RM 190++.. what the...! One more thing.. They wont simply using Fokker if they know its not safe to fly.. so if u worry to much.. better satisfying yourself with trains and traffic jammed. |
leicestertiger | bravo MAS cause come out with a very good idea...give a chance for those who want to travel from kt to penang and etc...without waisting their time transit at KLIA..hope in the nearest time this company can make profit and can get a better plane... |
mross | yes.....finaly we can fly from penang to phuket and koh somui, thanks to firefly airlines.....baikkkkkkkk punya....... |
bluetuna | Congratulations for offering another alternative afforable air travel. However, need to improve on your reservation system. Called yesrterday from Thailand to 03 78454543 to booked ticket but was put on-hold for more than 30 min. Finally gave up. |

Kaki in KL | Can we book through travel agent instead of book online? |
Qistina | its very hard to book here...is there any easier way? |
BP | Any plan firefly will be flying to Sabah, Sarawak and Bali. |
peja | agreed with wmkp..F50 was chosen for its economical factor. while, the distance is within its range up to 2000km where Boeing 737-300 range varies between 3400-4000km. no doubt abt safety. MAS taking care of it for years inc. Sabah & Sarawak Operation. just across in mind, next operation centre may be in KT. to serve KB, Kuantan, JB ;) congrats firefly!! |
suchdev | thats amazing. no headache of me flyingt to phuket, koh samui and specially to kota bahru. syabas to mas has offered their subsidairy company to make our life's easier. SYABAS |

Kaki in KL | Hope to have a connection from Kuala Lumpur as well. So that, it will give an extra option for people in KL to travel on budget carrier beside Air Asia. |
MR. AZURIN | SIR, PLEASE SEND ME A BROCHURE ABOUT YOUR DESTINATIONS. MY ADDRESS :- MAKTAB MAHMUD YAN, KAMPUNG ACHEH, 06900 YAN, KEDAH DARUL AMAN. THANK YOU. |
monkey | ..S'WAK rural area really in need in more well manage airlines..FAX absolutely a JOKE!!!!!!!!!..total rubbish!!!! Firefly should take it over from the JOKE FAX management!!! |
shag | "1.8 million flights by the end of 2004, and 2 of those flights had fatal accidents." To be fair, one of those fatal accidents was a hijacked B737 way back in 1977 (MH653). However the other fatal crash was a F50 in 1995 (MG2133). |
Cheap flights | La Hami & wmkp - thanks for your comments. I agree that its Malaysia Airlines' safety record (2 fatal accidents out of 1.8million flights) would probably carry through to Firefly Airlines. I've added in a paragraph about Malaysia Airlines previous use of Fokker F50s and that the planes were chosen for economic reasons. |
wmkp | Fokker 50 was chosen as its more economical to fly...as for safety, the airline is part of the Malaysian Airlines group, so I believe safety would be a priority. |
La Hami | BTW, prior to this, MAS used Fokker 50s for rural areas in Sarawak. MAS also used them a very long time ago in the 1980s. |
Cheap flights | Julie, thanks for your comment. I've added some commentary about the safety of the Fokker F50 (which Firefly Airlines are no doubt using as they're cheaper). |
julie | is the fokker 50 savety for fly ? why not using 737?many or us are happy to have this airlines ,cos its fly kt kuantan and kota bahru ,but we are really worry about the plane. |
Mervin | Firefly official website is http://www.fireflyz.com.my/ |
