Mugabe cronies fly in style

On the 4th of June we were quite surprised when Khaya Ngakula, SAA's part-time CEO (he has a couple of other jobs too, as reflected in his 22 directorships) announced that SAA made R500m profit on African flights in 2006. Africa was by far the most profitable part of SAA's operations (in total on international flights losses of R600m were made and R100m profits were made on local flights in South Africa).

This past week we have gained some insight into how SAA made half a billion rand on African in 2006. On Monday, the 25th June 2007, Zimbabwe sent a 15-strong advance party to the African Union summit in Accra. The group flew on Flight 52, an SAA flight from Johannesburg to Accra in the A class (or "Glass House") of an Airbus A340, leaving at 1800. The Robert Mugabe regime paid US$1,800 (R12,706) of scarce foreign currency resources for each flight ticket.
