Silverjet consider South Africa route

16 January 2007 - This news is a little bit late - but better late than never! I was reading an article from October 2006. Silverjet (which was recently founded by British businessman Lawrence Hunt) started offering business travellers on its London Luton to Newark Liberty flights an average return fare of less than £1000 (it operates all-business-class flights). It will compete in the budget business arena with MAXjet and Eos, which both launched last November. Silverjet leases 2 Boeing 767s, and offers a helicopter service to get passengers out of the heart of London to Luton aiport.

What is of more interest to South Africans is that "As well as twice-daily flights between London and New York, the carrier is reportedly considering adding three further routes to Europe and South Africa." The more competition the better. With Mango Airlines having entered the fray in December 2006, Nationwide adding an extra flight and Jet Airways considering opening a route to South Africa, competition is steadily building - prices from the major carriers are likely to come under continuing pressure.
