Mango Airlines R1 more expensive than Kulula

I've written a few times about Mango airlines - South African Airways' low-cost airline. I'm keeping a close eye on this start-up. Mango flights from Cape Town to Johannesburg are still at the R249 special:

  • "Due to public demand this special has been extened (sic) to 15 February.

  • You can now book and travel up to and inlcuding 15 February 2007 for just the great fare of R249.00 (one way all inclusive)"

And indeed, over the next week the cheapest flight from Cape Town to Johannesburg on Mango Airlines is R249, but then you have to fly on Thursday the 25th of January and have to leave at 1755. However, Mango shoots themselves in the foot (not just by their grade 4 spelling) by only advertising the special is until the 15th February...in fact Mango airlines offers the R249 into March as well.

Just by the way, Kulula have got loads of flights from Cape Town to Johannesburg at R1 lower than Mango - at R248. Personally I'd rather go Kulula than Mango - I like the humour on their airline.

1time dissapointingly does not enter the fray, with their lowest price in March being R449.

With Nationwide having quit providing free meals in economy class, I checked to see whether their prices had dropped accordingly (traditionally Nationwide Airlines and British Airways are the most expensive on local flights). On the 25th March they offer a flight at R621 - very poor value compared to Kulula and Mango Airlines.
