30 January 2007 -
The price war amongst South African airliners has shifted firmly on the Cape Town to Durban route, with 1Time Airline (One time airline) offering a one-way ticket from Cape Town to Durban or Durban to Cape Town from R198.
"According to our research, lots of Durban people want to hike up a hill that's higher than the statue of uShaka. There are also lots of Cape Town people who want to have a paddle in the sea that lasts longer than 30 seconds. So we came up with a brilliant idea - comfortable, direct, low-cost flights between these two great cities! That's why you can fly between CPT AND DBN DAILY FOR JUST R198 ONE WAY. Book your luxurious leather seat with decent legroom online now and until midnight 1 February 2007."
Mr Cheap Flights went to investigate, and indeed - it's true, there are flights available at R198 (mostly in April 2007). For instance on Friday the 13th (enough said) April one can buy a plane ticket at R198, leaving Cape Town at 1710. A quick comparison of plane ticket prices on Friday the 13th April leaving Cape Town for Durban is as follows:
1Time airline |
R198 |
Nationwide |
R575 |
Kulula airline |
R629 |
British Airways |
R745 |
Mango airline |
R769 |
South African Airways |
R878 |
1Time airline is clearly running a much lower price than other airlines, congratulations - a genuine special unlike some of the supposed specials being run by other airlines (when there were actually cheaper prices on the market). Interesting that Nationwide has the second-lowest price - seems they're embracing their new low-cost airline status. Also interesting that South African Airways and its wholly owned subsidiary Mango Airline are the two most expensive (British Airways more expensive than Mango airlines - go figure!).
