Worcester, South Africa

Situated in the Western Cape Province of South Africa, Worcester is named after the Marquis of Worcester, one of the brothers of Lord Charles Somerset. Worcester lies on the national road, about a 90 minute drive north-east from Cape Town. In 1819 Worcester was proclaimed a sub-drostdy of Tulbagh, and two farms were purchased to form the ground a which a town would be laid out. In 1822 Worcester was proclaimed a full drostdy.
