Electricity supply in the Western Cape

With Koeberg Nuclear Power Station's second reactor up and running in July 2006, the electricity supply will hopefully be continuous. This follows a period of from the second half of 2005 of the Western Cape being plagued by electricity outages. These resulted in large losses for the Western Cape's 20 000 active registered businesses. Accoding to a survey by the Cape Regional Chamber of Commerce & Industry, the most serious effects of the outages were:

  1. the loss of production time

  2. higher labour costs as a result of businesses having to pay overtime to make up shifts

  3. Damage to and failure of equipment
