Soweto

Soweto, which stands for (SOuth WEstern TOwnships), was developed for black people under the apartheid system. Indeed, it was in Soweto that much of the struggle against apartheid took place. Homes range from shack-dwellings to expensive mansions. Many tourists go to Soweto to see the Hector Pieterson (killed in the 1976 Soweto uprising) memorial, Kliptown (where the Freedom Charter of the ANC was drawn up) & Nelson Mandela's former home.

Greening of Soweto

In conjunction with the World Conservation Union, the governments of Norway and Demark handed over R2.2 million to Johannesburg City to purchase trees for the Greening of Soweto Legacy Project. Legacy Projects are initiatives linked to the Soccer World Cup 2010, but are set to benefit South Africa long after the final whistle. By the middle of 2007, about 30,000 trees are planned to have been planted.
