After running the ball from their tryline, Australia won a penalty for Boks offside (Bakkies Botha), which Giteau converted. Take a bow, Bryan Habana, for tackling Turner and then Giteau as they went for the tryline. Penalty to the Wallabies after Brussouw knocked Ginea's hand in a ruck, converted by Giteau. Morne Steyn brought the score back to 6-3 when he knocked a drop-kick over, only for Giteau to return the favour (9-3 Australia). After Australia infringed at the ruck, Steyn kicked over the penalty to bring his personally tally to 101 points (this was his 5th start). Steyn attempted but missed another drop goal to the jeers of the crowd who had only cheered when Giteau slotted his. A perfect pass by Barnes set up a try for Ashley-Cooper which was converted by Giteau, putting the Wallabies 10 ahead. Mtawarira was penalised in the 65th minute, for coming out of the scrum, but Giteau missed to the right. O Connor capitalised on Springbok mishandling to score in the corner in the 75th minute (the conversion from Giteau was wide).

A dubious penalty from the kickoff for "obstruction" against John Smit (who was supporting the jumper) is converted by Daniel Carter to put the All Blacks in the lead within the first minute. A second dubious call by the referee after 5 minutes against the Springboks camping on the All Black line when the All Black tackler didn't release the tackled man. On the 7th minute Francois Steyn knocked the ball over from 60m. On the 9th minute New Zealand was penalised for holding on, and Francois Steyn knocked the kick over from 55m. After exchanging penalties and drop kicks, Fourie du Preez scored a try (in his 52nd test) which Morne Steyn converted to put South Africa 16-6 ahead. Another dubious call by the referre in a loose ruck where New Zealand was infringing, gave a penalty to New Zealand. After the All Blacks didn't roll away in a ruck, Francois Steyn hit the 3rd consecutive penalty kick from the South African half over the poles to put South Africa 19-9 ahead. New Zealand's number 8 then shoulder-charged Habana after the whistle to give a penalty away (called by Wayne Barnes, the assistant referee), which Morne Steyn kicked over. The referee then penalised South Africa for being in front of the kicker (another dubious call, as the players could still be run onside by Pierre Spies), which Dan Carter kicked over. In the final minute of the half New Zealand had an excellent attacking opportunity, but the ball was kicked away by Dan Carter. Not only were the All Black behind after the first half, but lucky not to get 2 yellow cards and were the beneficiaries of some very dubious refereeing. New Zealand were running the ball from everywhere in the second half, and Jean de Villiers helped himself to an intercept from Dan Carter which M Steyn converted to make it 29-12 to South Africa. Another mistake by the referee when they called a Morne Steyn clearance direct into touch. With 25m to go, Pieter de Villiers was looking rather joyous, only for Sivivatu to score a try on a break for his 25th test try, which Carter converted. Penalty in fron tof the posts to New Zealand on the 60th minute for offside, and New Zealand took the scrum...but were penalised as South Africa demolished them in the scrum (with Smit annihilating Woodcock on the second Bok shove). Another penalty to New Zealand for Bakies Botha offside is converted by Carter. Miuliana hangs on on the ground to be penalised, which Morne Steyn slotted over (with 10m to go). With 2 minutes to go, McCaw catches a Carter cross-kick to dot down and Carter converts...but there simply is not enough time. Bleeding from the noses (John Smit) and mouth (Francois Steyn), the South Africans walked off the paddock victorious. An epic contest. The win gives South Africa the Trinations. The last time South Africa beat the All Blacks 3 times in a year was in 1949. John Smit wins a game in New Zealand for the first time (he wasn't there for the 2008 win in Dunedin). The first time that New Zealand have lost a game in Hamilton.

South Africa to Perth

The Springbok teamed surprised by arriving in Perth in the week before the match, rather than flying the week before (they had a bye). The team's strategy was to stay on South African time.
