After the success of the Indian Premier League in South Africa in 2009; South Africa, Australia and New Zealand's cricketing bodies started advancing plans to launch SPL cricket - Southern Premier League Cricket - between the 3 countries. The plan is that the hosting of the SPL will be rotated between South Africa, Australia and New Zealand, with the first series hosted by South Africa in October 2011. Permission has apparently been secured from cricketing authorities in India, for Indian players to participate in the SPL (the participation of Indian players is considered crucial to the commercial success of the competition - this is hoped to draw in Indian television). The plan is for the SPL to consist of 10 teams each linked to a cricketing stadium; 4 teams from South Africa, 4 from Australia and 2 from New Zealand.
