To make good with passengers impacted by the grounding, Qantas is offering a free flight. "Now that no more industrial action can take place and the cloud of further strike action has lifted, we are 100 per cent focused on what matters to customers: getting them to their destinations, safely, on time and in comfort, and rewarding their loyalty to Qantas." says Alan Joyce, the Chief Executive of Qantas

Rant of the day
Tourism is a crucial industry in South Africa, and disrupting & threatening tourists results in them spreading the word overseas and not returning again. This in turn threatens the livelihoods of those working in the tourism industry.
To be working at a major tourist attraction in Cape Town & to demand to not work over Christmas to New Year, the busiest time of the year, is financial suicide - it's like a farmer saying he's not going to work during the harvesting season.
If you're unhappy with your job's requirements, why not go work somewhere else?

The Purple shall rule! Mariska wrote to say: "I had another bad experience on the one bus trip of my lifetime :) They showed horror movies, with small children on the bus. It was filthy, naked and violent. Beyond my shock and disbelief! I don't now where they find this cheap films, but personally this is my opinion, that these violence people are exposed to on busses (and possibly E.TV - wrestling mania, W.W.E or something), but it is my opinion, that this is major contribrution to the violent crimes we experiences in South Africa. PLEASE, CAN'T we take a stand against this."

The Bottom Line: The Ministry of Transport calls "on all parties concerned to take advantage of the planned consultative processes to share with government their views on how we could fund better road infrastructure without hurting the pocket of the consumer".
The answer's quite simple - (1) the principle of taxing those who use roads, according to how much they use the roads, is correct (2) there's no way of funding road infrastructure without hurting the pockets of road users, (3) there's already a satisfactory method of funding road infrastructure through the levies on the fuel price, which has the huge advantage that no new method of tracking vehicles needs to be devised (at cost), (4) maximise the amount of tax which goes into road-building by (i) getting rid of salary & other wastage sucked up by the Ministry of Transport (e.g. let the Minister drive his own car like most workers in the country, and hire the cheapest car when he's away from office (we can help with this!), flying low cost carriers like Velvet Sky instead of full service carriers like South African Airways), (ii) improve the competitiveness of Transnet, so that most cargo is transported by rail rather than by road, (iii) transparency in all financial decisions by publishing all details on your website - publish details of requests for tender and replies, give the public a chance to comment on these on the website to assist with decision-making, and then document decisions and their rationale. |
