Both Kenya and the Democratic Republic of Congo have over 1000 species of birds compared to South Africa's 951. However, there are more endemic bird species in South Africa than any other single country in Africa. Southern Africa has 99 endemic birds which are found nowhere else on the planet; these are concentrated in the arid Namib, Karoo & south-west areas. Southern Africa has far more lark species than anywhere else on the planet.
There are 6 species of birds which occur only in the fynbos habitat, including the Cape Sugarbird & the Orange-breasted Sunbird.
