Fish River Lodge

Why waste money on a trip to the USA to see the Grand Canyon, when the startling beauty of the Fish River Canyon is right on our doorstep, and there is a lodge which is situated closer to the verge, than anything at the Grand Canyon. When I saw the dramatic photos Ruth had sent to me of their Fish River Lodge, I immediately put it on my to-do list to take a drive up to Namibia and visit.

The Fish River Lodge is situated in the Fish River Canyon in the south-west of Namibia, and is the only lodge perched directly on the rim of the Canyon, offering you breathtaking views from sunrise to sunset.

Set in a grove of ancient Quiver trees, the Fish River Lodge has been carefully designed to echo the terraced and rugged terrain as well as the colours and textures of this spectacular canyon landscape. The interior is a blend of classic and contemporary design and furnished with many accessories made by San and Nama communities whose ancestors once roamed the land.

Situated in Canyon Nature Park, a 45,000 hectare private nature reserve, the lodge can offer a variety of invigorating activities in pristine wilderness. Take a leisurely 3 hour stroll along the rim of the canyon, a full day drive or hike down to the river or take a scenic sundowner drive for a truly magical experience. For the more adventurous, immerse yourself in the canyon for four days with our guided hiking and luxury camping experience (Apr - Sep only).

Friendly staff are waiting to care for you at the Fish River Lodge where you will find space to explore, time to relax and experience a sensory awakening. Being only eight metres from the rim of the canyon, it will feel as if you are on the edge of eternity.

Excursions from the Fish River Lodge

Scenic Sundowner Drive
January to December

The afternoon scenic drive is the perfect introduction to the geology, flora and fauna of this fascinating landscape. Watch the sun set while enjoying drinks, snacks and panoramic views of the canyon and meandering Fish River.

Leaving at 5:30pm so please leave plenty of time when arriving at the lodge by car as this excursion is not to be missed.

Day Canyon Drive
January to December

Experience an amazing variety of geological features as you journey into the depths of the second largest canyon in the world. See rough limestone, shiny quartzite, fine shale and dramatic fault lines.

Catch your breath as you take in the dramatic views of the river before descending into the base of the canyon for refreshments by the river.

Leaving at 6am this excursion takes approximately 7 hours

Canyon Rim Walks
January to December

Awaken your senses with an easy walk from the lodge along the rim of the canyon, providing spectacular scenery, space to breath & time to reflect.

Guided walks are also available (subject to demand) providing information on the resilient flora and fauna of this harsh environment as well as this stunning geological feature.
