All persons living in South Africa aged 15-65 inclusive at the time of the survey.

Not in Labour force

12.9m

Working aged population neither employed nor unemployed.

Labour force

16.8m

The sum of employed and unemployed people.

Employed

12.3m

Persons aged 15-65 who did any work or who did not work but had a job or business in the seven days prior to the survey interview.

Unemployed

4.5m

Persons aged 15-65 who did not have a job or business in the 7 days prior to the survey interview but had looked for work or taken steps to start a business in the 4 weeks prior to the interview and were able to take up work within 2 weeks of the interview.

Discouraged work-seekers

3.3m

Persons who want to work and are able to work but who say they are not actively looking for work.
